Perceptive observation. I can attest that much of the Democrats' strength was anti-Republicanism rather than the attraction of socialism.
In my decades of experience living in liberal Boston and Cambridge I can say with confidence that most libs live to be the person in the room condemning someone else’s values/morals, while complaining that religious conservatives are too judgemental. Their favorite position is that of the voice of morality against the eeeeevil majority. They love thinking themselves as cool loners, crying against the mob for the rights of the Little People.
Of course, they despise the very people they claim to champion, and only care about them because they give the liberal a handy someone to champion around their cool peers. They party with the white wine set, and whine about the beer and blue collar folks—who they’d never live among if they could afford it.
