Republican Meg Whitman's cam paign for governor of California has hit a snag over her hiring and firing of a Latina housekeeper who lied about her immigration status. It's one more sign that the GOP needs to face the immigration issue squarely.
The latest flap in the campaign centers on her Democratic opponent, Jerry Brown -- who either stood by as an aide called Whitman "a whore," or actually used the word himself. Whitman needs to use the break to get a handle on her own flap.
Whitman says she fired the housekeeper as soon as she realized the woman had deceived her with false documents, including a fake Social Security number. Democratic operative Gloria Allred, now the illegal's lawyer, claims Whitman knew years earlier.
But the details won't really matter -- because this isn't just an issue of one employer and employee, but a far broader problem that plagues the whole state and, in fact, the whole country.
Republicans need some support from Hispanics -- 21 percent of the state's voters -- to win. Whitman had 35 percent before this flap -- 19 points behind her Democratic opponent, Jerry Brown, but five points ahead of what Arnold Schwarzenegger drew in his victorious run for governor in 2003.
Indeed, notes The Hoover Institution's Peter Robinson, Whitman "has worked hard from the very beginning to appeal to Hispanics in the state, the first GOP candidate for statewide office to do so systematically and authentically."
Hispanics don't vote in lockstep. Indeed, Herman Gonzales, a Republican from East Los Angeles, told the Los Angeles Times that he supports Whitman but doesn't think she's been outspoken enough about illegal immigration

Meg’s maid was an easy target for the Brown people....in making her rich, they have destroyed her and their plan has backfired. If Californians elect long-in-the-tooth old hippie Jerry Brown, they deserve NO BAILOUTS from the American taxpayers! But that is exactly where they will be headed under Brown. Meg will be much like Christy in N.J......I wonder if the majority of Californians have what it takes to make their state whole again.

No. It’s one more sign that illegals will lie their ass off to get what they want. And they never get called on it.

Author has no problem passing judgment off on the republican in the first part... but she doesn’t even give an opinion on the “whore” thing. Nice.

Yes, and the expectation of bailouts is the reason a lot of them will vote for Brown.
Doubtful they’ll get them with Meg...the vast majority of Obama’s “stash” went to blue areas under Porkulus.

How can one argue that about her? If nothing else, she is a national treasure, like a Bill Gates, for forming Ebay.

The people have had enough....Career politicians and this tyrant in the WH have awakened all of us. It’s not dems and republicans now....it’s about all of us...Helping each other, but not through the govt.

Isn’t it amazing that there are two sets of laws in this country, one for the law-abiding, tax-paying citizens; and another set for progressives that essentially is a perpetual “get out of jail free” card?
The most egregious thing to me about this contrived hit-job on Whitman is that Brown is currently California’s Attorney General, and HE has the responsibility to prosecute the maid for her illegal acts. AND it’s HIS responsibility to go after Allred for putting her client in harm’s way.
But no. Since his campaign is behind this whole staged media event, as well as the direct beneficiary, he will once again openly ignore his responsibility as AG, and a complicit press will say nothing.
And he thinks we want people like this as our leaders?!
Whitman did everything she was supposed to do, short of hiring a private detective to trace the maid’s background. The letter she supposedly received specifically said that she could take no action and that it was a problem the maid had to resolve. The letter was, in a sense, designed to be non-enforcement.
I agree that we need clarification and enforcement in our immigration laws (although I am afraid that under Obama, we will get something we really are not going to like - all Muslim and African illegals get fast-tracked to citizenship, for example). But Whitman certainly can’t be blamed for what is essentially a Dem policy that has been in place for years.
In any case, Andrea Peyser is a raving liberal nutcase most of the time. And she’s gotten worse over the years.
Which means, among other things, coming to the realization that nothing they are willing to do will every satisfy the illegal Hispanic population, period. So they might as well get about the business of doing what's right for America and that's seal the borders, come down hard on those who hire illegals and start kicking out those illegals who can't, or won't, assimilate and get along as non-hyphenated Americans.
Each of these steps has its drawbacks, and none of them will be easy or well-tolerated, but if we don't do something pretty quickly it will become a moot point as we lose our country.
And then, after all this is done, we can move along to getting a handle on the Muslim situation.
And do what with those that will?
They all need to go, unless they are willing to serve in the US military. With conditions, that sounds like the only justification for any type of "fast track" program.

Yes, they all need to go. Even if it can’t be done, we need to be working on it. Anything less is simply giving up and conceding victory to them.
I don’t think any of them who came here illegally should be able to bypass any of them who did it the correct way. Period.

That's not true. They want you to hire that person, and for that person to get social benefits, food stamps, and eventually voting citizenship. The background check is only necessary if you are running for office as a GOP candidate, so they can use it to claim hypocrisy--that you hired an illegal, and that you then lacked the compassion to hire an immigration lawyer to defend him/her when you found out about it. That's what they've been saying about Whitman.
That's SOP for liberals. It's similar to the Black Panthers voter intimidation case. No prosecution for those who help them "win" an election.
Now every liberal politico is going to have to tripple the wages of their gardeners, drivers, maids, nannys, and cooks in order to keep the peace.
You are exactly correct. After this flap, would you hire a Hispanic? I wouldn't. “Sorry Juan, you just don't have the skills I was looking for.” or “Juan, fill out the application and I'll call you after looking over all the other applications.” Then never call.
As with most liberal / progressive plans, this will backfire and the children of illegals will go hungry.
Like giving $300K to the Environmental Defense Fund to help list the Delta Smelt? She should never get a Hispanic vote again after that one.
