Two California students hurt when man opens fire

A gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Carlsbad, California, injuring two students who were outside during lunch Friday, police said.

The students, ages 6 and 7, were shot and suffered minor injuries, said Lt. Jay Eppel of the Carlsbad Police Department. Both were flown to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego.

Construction workers at Kelly Elementary School detained a 41-year-old male suspect shortly after noon until officers arrived, Eppel said. Police do not suspect the man has a relationship with any students at the school.

Worker Carlos Partida told CNN affiliate KGTV that he got into his truck and was able to knock the gunman down with the vehicle. The man, dressed in black, was then tackled by other construction workers and witnesses.

The suspect's vehicle was parked near the school. Officers found a handgun and propane tank inside, police said. The bomb squad was called to the scene to conduct a more thorough search, Eppel said.

Pete Anderson, who operates a small research vineyard near the school, said he was tending vines when "I heard something like a gunshot, followed by another."

Three more shots followed about 30 seconds later, he said.

"At this point, I knew this was not a drill," he told CNN.

Anderson said he did not see the accused shooter until after he was taken into custody.

The school is in a residential neighborhood in this city between Los Angeles and San Diego.

"This is extremely unusual," Anderson said.

Luckily only two children were hurt, and only grazed by the bullets. The school went on immediate lockdown, as previously drilled. I think he jumped a fence to get into the school grounds, because most of the schools in carlsbad have installed exterior fencing and make all visitors to campus go through the office.

The shooter was most likely firing blanks, and the wounds were inflicted by powder burns:

No fucking way, that article is complete bullshit! I work for the school district and THIS WAS NOT A DRILL, two students were shot with flesh-wounds through their arms. It was a miracle that no one was killed as he fired 5 or so shots into the crowd. Believe me, we have been dealing with the fallout for this entire week, not only with the students, but with the staff and parents as well, and it will continue for some time. Why must everyone automatically assume a conspiracy theory is the correct one!

Thank you for your response. But how do you know it wasn’t a drill? How do you know the two wounded kids had bullets pass through their arms? Don’t assume the cops would have notified everybody in the school district if they had planned a drill. There are lots of examples of ‘drills’ being done to unsuspecting groups of people.

“The school went on immediate lockdown, as previously drilled.”

How long ago was ‘previous?’

Look, I’m not going to get into a long, drawn-out, back and forth with you trying to convince you of the truth. Occam’s razor aside, you can believe whatever nonsense you want to believe. In this case, you believe because the gunman said “these are blanks, this is a drill” that he was speaking the truth? He also said “kill all the little fags” as he was shooting, does that mean that all the kids on the playground are homosexual? No, it means he is a lunatic!

Then you ask why he would plead not-guilty after being caught red-handed? Perhaps not-guilty by reason of insanity? Ask any lawyer, almost everyone always pleads not-guilty at arraignment, regardless if they change their plea before trial.

You asked about drills, how often the last one was done. All our schools drill multiple times per year, and have done 3-in-1 drills specifically before, practicing going into lockdown for an intruder on campus. Our schools have done ‘surprise’ drills before with police cooperation and observation.

As soon as the gunman jumped the fence and pulled out the gun, the children started running into classrooms. I don’t know how many were injured with scrapes and such in the process, but the two girls were discovered to have the gunshot wounds in the classroom where about 70 kids ended up, and the teacher then notified the office of that fact. Perhaps that’s why the original report said only scrapes and bruises. The fact is that two children were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

There were a lot of lessons learned by staff on that day, and the district is already in the process of implementing changes to emergency procedures that our schools will implement. That actually happens every year, after our participation in the state-wide drill that is coming up soon. We debrief, and see what procedures might be tweaked to create the best outcomes. We certainly will have to revise some of our assumptions and procedures based on the what just happened.

I did notice that the author of that blog article, Culhavoc, mentioned thanking ‘starviego’ for contributing research. Are you that person, and is that why you seem to be so invested in advancing this conspiracy theory? Believe me, I know the people involved here personally. This was NO drill.

“Our schools have done ‘surprise’ drills before with police cooperation and observation.”

Do these ‘surprise’ drills include someone who plays the role of a shooter? If so who do they choose for the role? A police officer? Also you sidestepped my question as to when the most recent drill occurred. Can you get a bit more specific?

And yes, I am ‘starviego.’

We have resource officers in our secondary schools, police officers who work for the city but we pay a portion of their salary and they work out of our schools. A friend of mine told me of one drill that happened coordinated by the resource officer that involved a different plain-clothed officer who pulled up in front of the school, got out of his car, went to the trunk and pulled out a large rifle. The resource officer observed how the office staff reacted as they called 911 (who had been alerted about the upcoming call in advance), called for a school-wide lockdown, etc. The principal knew about an upcoming drill but not the specifics of what/when. Afterwards they debriefed and went over the lessons learned (such as making sure to actively notice details of a suspects description, vehicle description, etc.).

I don’t know specifically the date of each school’s last drill or what that drill consisted of, as that is not my department. I do know the administrator who is in charge of our emergency planning, and we have won awards from the Red Cross for our work on opening and staffing an evacuation center at our high school during the huge fire in the area a couple of years ago. I have also attended a training he coordinated in search & rescue techniques put on by the fire department in an abandoned building that was as real as can be simulated.

I can see that you choose to continue to believe your pet theory. I choose to believe my friends who were eye-witnesses to the events as they happened. I don’t believe that you are receptive to changing your opinion, and I’m not going to waste my time with you.
