A gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Carlsbad, California, injuring two students who were outside during lunch Friday, police said.
The students, ages 6 and 7, were shot and suffered minor injuries, said Lt. Jay Eppel of the Carlsbad Police Department. Both were flown to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego.
Construction workers at Kelly Elementary School detained a 41-year-old male suspect shortly after noon until officers arrived, Eppel said. Police do not suspect the man has a relationship with any students at the school.
Worker Carlos Partida told CNN affiliate KGTV that he got into his truck and was able to knock the gunman down with the vehicle. The man, dressed in black, was then tackled by other construction workers and witnesses.
The suspect's vehicle was parked near the school. Officers found a handgun and propane tank inside, police said. The bomb squad was called to the scene to conduct a more thorough search, Eppel said.
Pete Anderson, who operates a small research vineyard near the school, said he was tending vines when "I heard something like a gunshot, followed by another."
Three more shots followed about 30 seconds later, he said.
"At this point, I knew this was not a drill," he told CNN.
Anderson said he did not see the accused shooter until after he was taken into custody.
The school is in a residential neighborhood in this city between Los Angeles and San Diego.
"This is extremely unusual," Anderson said.

It’s good that there are some decent people left in that area who are willing to stop these dirtbags but one question remains...
what the hell are children doing in the state of California?!
“...A gunman opened fire at an elementary school...”

WTF?
I just heard this on FOX (Sheppard Smith’s Show). As he was leading into the news conference, Shep said: “Somebody said they heard the shooter say Obama’s name when he was shooting” (paraphrased). I watched the 10 minute interview, and not reporter asked about the shooter saying Obama’s name.
When they went back to Shep, this loser was dismayed that no reporters had asked about this. He seemed really disappointed that this isn’t a political issue!
You are a loser Shep!
“Worker Carlos Partida told CNN affiliate KGTV that he got into his truck and was able to knock the gunman down with the vehicle. The man, dressed in black, was then tackled by other construction workers and witnesses.”
Bravo for Carlos and the other quick-witted bystanders!
Is it a coincidence that this occurred near the anniversary of the shooting at the Nickel Mines Amish School?
Probably some candidates amongst the heroes for pardons and “improvement” of immigration status.
Surprised the police had anything to haul away after Construction workers held the guy until they arrived.
Well, it’s down there near San Diego. Even the construction workers are a little metro.
Carlsbad is an affluent community along the coast in northern San Diego county.
This article stated he had a one gallon gasoline tank as well.

I would never venture into a “gun free zone”. Those are the most dangerous places for anyone that hasn’t figured that out yet.
Bump!

Thank you, Carlos!

Cain said the gunman, described as a white male in his 20s, has given three names, one of them a woman’s name. Witnesses said the gunman was “ranting” and may have mentioned the president.

Has everyone just gone nuts, or WHAT???
Why?
There are never any guns in a gun-free zone.
That would be, like, outlawed.
Zactly!! :)
I think the gun free zone doubles the penalty involved, or something like that.
I work in Carlsbad and live only 5 miles away in Vista, and this is the first I’ve heard about it. There are just a lot of nuts around this state in general, IMO.
