Hogs gone wild: Texas declares war

October is not be the best month to be a feral hog in the Texas.

The state’s Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples has declared October “Hog Out Month - Get the Hog Outta Texas!” as part of a campaign to eradicate the pests.

The campaign aims to get Texans to lock and load and hunt down the animals, which cause widespread damage to farmers and other landowners.

“Not only are feral hogs a costly nuisance to agricultural operations and wildlife habitats, but they are increasingly finding their way into urban areas and destroying residents’ yards, public parks and golf courses,” Staples said in a statement this week when the campaign was unveiled.

“On my ranch in East Texas, I have eliminated a number of hogs and I am asking Texans around the state to step up and join the county challenge to learn about feral hogs and how best to legally hunt and trap them in their area,” he added.

Feral hogs are mostly domestic pigs that have gone wild, with some European wild boars that have escaped from exotic game ranches thrown into the mix and bloodlines.

State officials estimate the feral hog population in Texas to be around 2 million and they are estimated to cause around $400 million in damage annually as they eat or root up pastures, crops and even golf courses.

This makes them one of the most costly invasive species in the country.

The campaign may not please some animal rights groups but Texas farmers don’t need much prompting to pull the trigger when it comes to feral hogs.

Their numbers are growing because they are prolific breeders with few natural predators and are moving into suburban and urban areas.

Hog hunting ping!

They are a huge problem. I got my first AR a couple of years ago after figuring out I couldn't pop enough of them at one time with my lever action 30-30.

Sows and piglets are excellent table fare.

“Wouldn’t these make numerous tasty meals??”

If you like intestinal worms, maybe.

(Some people eat them: the New Mexican word for them is “idiot.”)

>> Feral Hogs are carriers of many diseases
>> worms

LOL! I don’t recommend the Feral Hog Sushi. You *do* have to cook ‘em before eating.

By the way, PETA* won’t approve of this hunting.
But PETA** is fine with it!

*that’s People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
**that’s People Eating Tasty Animals

I would think if the meat were properly processed and cooked, worms and infections wouldn’t be an issue.

On many occasions, I have had meals of wild hogs from California...actually quite good.

Are these the same animal?

no, but the ones that do are now in horror now that their precious golf courses are being damaged.

Because until now, they would have been arguing for saving the boars while marching around with posters of little fuzzy boar cubs.

Case in point, the wolf hunting in Alaska that the liberals hate Palin for engaging in .... but just let a wolf be seen on their tennis court of golf course and they will be calling for wholesale extermination of the species.

Feral hogs are either Russian boars, domesticated pigs gone wild or a combination of the two.

In different regions they may be called wild boars, razorbacks, pineywoods rooters or woods hogs. Whatever the name, they have two things in common - they breed like rabbits and eat just about anything. They have a particular fondness for acorns and agricultural crops.

They’ve become a problem as far north as Wisconsin which has a “shoot all you want” policy.

“Are these the same animal?”

Genetically, sure. Environmentally, no.

There are a lot of worms and parasites that simply cannot survive in Canada, but do just fine in the hot swamps on the Gulf or the piney woods of East Texas.

I suppose if you cook things perfectly and do not cross-contaminate one drop of blood, you’d do fine.

IF, you do everything perfectly.
