Austin American Statesman ^ | 10/06/10 | Mike Ward

A campaign to create a new category of driving while intoxicated is being promoted at the Capitol as one way to curb growing problems in Texas' system of punishing drunken drivers.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo, among the supporters of the change, said the idea behind a new offense of "driving while ability impaired" — DWAI — would cover drivers whose blood-alcohol content is between 0.05 and 0.07

Did you really think we want those laws observed? said Dr. Ferris. We want them to be broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against... We’re after power and we mean it... There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be
much easier to deal with. (’Atlas Shrugged’ 1957)

I don’t agree. Cell phones do not cause accidents. Stupid people who think they can text and drive at the same time cause accidents.

Not many cops are out at night, you can’t get the killer drivers with the .20 & .30 if all of the patrolmen are at the station drinking coffee, staying out of the cold and booking .05 sober people.

Will this include testing all government employees during any car stop for any reason! If so, sounds like a good idea.

Seems they are not satisfied with the original premise of decreasing supposed drunk driving, and now are willing to lower the BAC just to keep up their statistics, revenue stream and persecution of citizenry.

I think we ought to have a few driving codes for police.

Driving While Fat Bastard

Driving While Shooting In the Car

Driving While Stuffing Face with Food and Drink

Driving While Using Sirens and Lights for Non-Emergencies just to get through an intersection cause I don’t want to wait

Any cops that drive around in a vehicle that has headlights/taillights out fine the officer double. He should take his own advice he gives to citizens to check the vehicle out before driving it.

the arrogance and big brotherish mentality of these guys has to end. How many cops would be corraled by this after hours coming home from a bar? Oh, that’s Ted, he’s a cop, don’t give him a ticket.

Brilliantly stated. Just look at the IRS laws. Everyone can be found out to be a criminal.

Having recently been T-Boned by a woman who was texting while driving, I would certainly agree.

Well of course it’s the people. But it’s the thing they are attempting to use while driving that screws things up. If they weren’t able to use it they wouldn’t be distracted.

I say let people use them but if they get into accidents they greatly mulptiply and fines and penalties. Like at least ten-fold. More if someone dies because of them.

I am saying there is a ‘brotherhood’ of police officers. AS one who had cops in my family.

Look at the trend in laws in general.

They have the entire country sectioned off.
You cant make a move without potentially stepping in trouble.

The reason?
