“A tax on vehicle miles traveled (VMT) was shot down last year by President Obama.”
As much as he travels, I can understand why, but I can’t believe he actually met a tax he didn’t like.
Taxing drivers by the mile AND by the gallon.
There. Fixed it.
Typical big government BS. People are buying cars that get better gas mileage, thus paying less gas tax, so now they want to tax the miles. Liberals are always looking to punish success.
Actually, heavier vehicles cause more wear and tear on the infrastructure, and use more fuel, thus pay more tax per mile. The fuel tax is more fair than a mileage tax, and much less intrusive.
How in tarnation does a gas station track my miles between fillups?
Maybe the electric cars need to pay by the mile, but those of us who drive older vehicles pay alot in gas taxes now. We don’t need any more tax applied.
If half the time and creative energy went into solving the world’s problems that goes into thinking about how to tax citizens of the world’s nations, we’d all be living in a modern Utopia.
At what point will we be asked to simply hand over all assets to The State?
What about the Federal Excise Tax on tires?
Reality check Higher miles per gallon, less fuel tax!
What a load this is not about miles driven or the roads.
Have to fund the Life Styles of the Corrupt and Political somehow; this is what people are unhappy about.
As long as it is anonymous, I think I might like the idea. If the only thing it does is tax your mileage. lol My family only has 4 trucks. I think the prius should pay as much as me! lol
Mike
Problem is, they would tax it both ways because that is what government does.
How hypocritical! The government forces us to buy high mileage cars that are ill suited to our needs and then laments that we are now using too little gasoline to fund their highway taxes. We need a complete clean out in Washington including more than a few fossilized RINOs.
current federal gas tax (18.4 cents per gallon for cars), which hasnt changed since 1993. A fee of just one penny per mile would equal the revenue currently collected by the fuel tax, the report states. A fee of two cents per mile would generate the revenue necessary to support an appropriate level of investment over the long term.
People who have high mpg cars (which they have been begging us to buy to 30 years now) will get screwed royally. Example I drive 45 miles a day in a car that gets 45 mpg. Therefore my tax is 18.4 cents. Making that 2 cents per mile it goes to 90 cents. That's another 144 a year down the drain.
Job Creation the Democrat way. This would require more administration to handle the increased paperwork. Also, let us not forget they will have to hire more people to enforce the new tax. And they will have to build and staff more prisons to put “citizens” in that fail to “pay their fair share”.
I wonder just how much the American people are willing to take before they vote these clowns out of power.
IMO, this post alone should get you banned as a fascist control freak.
If you weren't so pathetically comical you'd have been gone a long time ago.
This is not just about revenue. There are not enough hybrids to make a difference, and there are almost no electric cars at all.
No way I’m going to let them track my vehicle or mileage so that they can “tax it.”
The way corrupt municipalities and state governments are going, expect all new road construction to eventually be “pay-go” toll roads with EZ tags. Also expect to see more exisiting highways unconstitutionally converted to toll roads and those toll roads sold to foreign investors for quick cash to balance budgets.
On to the point of paying by the mile - that is idiocy. Generally small light vehicles that do less damge to the road, get better gas mileage. Generally, large heavy vehicles that do more damage to the road, get worse gas mileage. The great thing about taxing fuel is that nobody can avoid the fee and people who drive small, light, fuel sipping cars pay way less than people who drive large, heavy gas hogs. This is fair because the small light cars do less damage to the road than the big heavy cars. If you pay by the mile, then the guy in the 8000 lb rig will pay the same fee as the guy in the 2000 lb micro-car, even though his rig is doing 4 times the damge.
Now your trivia of the day: One fully loaded semi-truck and trailer does the same damage to the road as 1,000 average passenger cars. Think about that one. Just imaging if semi's paid by the mile at the same rate as the Miata owner.
A few issues I see.
1. Long haul trucking...truckers will pass the cost of the tax to clients...expect prices of everything to go up.
2. Older folks...who only drive on residential streets, will be taxed to maintain highways that they never use.
3. People are sick and tired of being punished for doing what they have been asked to do. Use more fuel efficient cars, says the government. We comply and the government punishes us by concocting another tax.
It’s getting to the point where more and more people are going to just ignore the mandates of the government.
