Google CEO Eric Schmidt really has a knack for expressing relatively benign ideas in a way that makes him and his company look incredibly creepy...
" With your permission, you give us more information about you, about your friends, and we can improve the quality of our searches. We don't need you to type at all. We know where you are. We know where you've been. We can more or less know what you're thinking about. "

That is outrageous, no town has the legal authority to require leasing of dogs. Take it to court.

Were the dogs of war leased or unleased? Did they have a lease to purchase arrangement with a one dollar buy out at the end? I used to offer that on printing equipment.

[not a government agency trying to ensure fair outcomes, not to worry.]
Well, there is...
this. But I'm sure THEY would never try to influence outcomes {cough}.

Im not all that happy about the new instant google feature. It gets underfoot like a group of hungry cats. The other night, as I was googling for the dirt on the late Tyler Clementi, the instant feature started turning itself off as I got warmer. It was almost as if it didn't want to gross me out without at least having me hit Enter first.

I was reading they now have over 800,000 servers spread across several dozen data centers around the world. They pack their computers into standard 1AAA shipping containers 1160 machines per container, two CPUs, 16GB, two hard drives per machine. 250 kw power consumption. Each computer has its own battery backup (cheaper and more easily scalable than a central battery backup).
I wonder how many boxes the NSA has?

Re: “private mode”:
A) Google still sees your IP address, and hence can associate your search data with that; and
B) No matter what your privacy setting or even alternative search engines are, your Internet service provider sees every single bit coming and going from your house. (Except for encrypted data....) How much do you trust them?

Not at all.
What’s the sense of “in private browing” then?
It’s a sham?

Private mode isn’t a sham, but it is limited in the privacy it offers you (not much). It just makes it harder, but not impossible, for a web site to keep track of what you’re up to.
Running some sort of encrypted session to a collection of uncrackable proxy servers I think may be the closest way to obtain some sort of true privacy for your web traffic.

Wow. Thanks. I added scroogle and IMDB to my list of search engines on Firefox. Haven’t used googly for a long time now.

My IP uses proxy servers, and every time I come across one of those Internet gadgets that reads your IP and tells you your location, it’s always off by at least two states for mine.
