'Seven people were shot -- two of whom have died -- in an apparent random shooting spree that began about 4 p.m. Monday in southeast Gainesville.
The suspect, identified by relatives as Clifford L. Miller Jr., 24, was found in a truck at 2306 S.E. 46th Terrace dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Alachua County Sheriffs Office and relatives.
Sheriffs deputies responded to reports of shots heard and found the suspect dead in a red Chevrolet pickup. Miller had a police record and a history of mental illness, according to Alachua County court records.
We believe were with the suspect and the vehicle, and there is no one out there running around, said Gainesville Police Department Capt. Ed Book.
Five people were shot within the city limits -- two at 907 S.E. Ninth St. and three at other locations, said Cpl. Tscharna Senn, spokeswoman for the Gainesville Police Department.
Two people were shot outside the city limits, one of them fatally, Alachua County sheriffs Lt. Steve Maynard said. He said officials are treating a variety of injuries, all gunshot-related.
The surviving victims shot within the city limits all gave similar descriptions of the suspect.
Senn said one of those killed was found in a house at 914 S.E. 10th Ave. Neighbors confirmed that Millers father, Clifford L. Miller Sr., 52, lived at the house.
When asked about a possible motive, Senn said: We have no idea right now, absolutely none. It appears to be random.

This is a University town, but the shootings were not near the University of Florida. This appears to be a failure to act under Florida's Baker Act, which allows for the hospitalization of people with dangerous psychiatric conditions.
Gainesville is an interesting town with an interesting variety of people. For a while there, its murder rate was higher than that of Miami.
I think the Baker Act just allows for one to be held for psych evaluation for only a few days.
We’ll find he was Baker Acted, probably several times. The question then becomes who kept turning him loose?
The Bath School disaster is the name given to three bombings in Bath Township, Michigan, USA, on May 18, 1927, which killed 38 primary school children and 7 adults, and injured at least 58 people. Most of the victims were children in the second to sixth grades (712 years of age) attending the Bath Consolidated School. Their deaths constitute the deadliest act of mass murder in a school in U.S. history. The perpetrator was school board member Andrew Kehoe, who was upset by a property tax that had been levied to fund the construction of the school building. He blamed the additional tax for financial hardships which led to foreclosure proceedings against his farm. These events apparently provoked Kehoe to plan his attack.
On the morning of May 18, Kehoe first killed his wife, then set his farm buildings afire. As fire fighters arrived at the farm, an explosion devastated the north wing of the school building, killing many of the people inside. Kehoe used a detonator to ignite dynamite and hundreds of pounds of pyrotol which he had secretly planted inside the school over the course of many months. As rescuers started gathering at the school, Kehoe drove up, stopped, and detonated a bomb inside his shrapnel-filled vehicle, killing himself and the school superintendent, and killing and injuring several others. During rescue efforts searchers discovered an additional 500 pounds (230 kg) of unexploded dynamite and pyrotol planted throughout the basement of the school’s south wing.
He was probably upset that Alabama destroyed the Gators. I do not watch TV but I know a few distraught Gators. They need to grow up.
College towns attract a lot of idiots who never grow up. Prayers for the innocent people killed by the piece of filth,
Must be an election coming up. Shootings are being reported nationally now.
‘The question then becomes who kept turning him loose?’
And therein hangs the lawsuit.
lemme guess, he lied on a 4473 or didnt bother buying a *legal* weapon ???
Well he probably used an AK-47 automatic assualt rifle with a high capacity magazine. A shoulder thing that goes up may also have been included.
Another one does it wrong.
Somehow we have to get it through their thick liberal heads . . .
Shoot yourself first, then go on your rampage.
I'm over it....Now if they lose to LSU this weekend......
Damn.......
I wish these gunmen would kill themselves BEFORE going on their shooting sprees.
Coming from an LSU fan, I’m not holding my breath. It’ll depend on which team’s putrid offense shows up. the score may end up 2-0.
Saves the taxpayers of Florida for a trial and jail housing costs....sounds good..../sarc (sort of)
You mean Columbine is not the deadliest???? Really? The media would tell you otherwise...lol.
I was thilled that the Gators went down.....Go Seminoles all the way! FSU #1!!!!
