2nd District Race in a Virtual Tie (NM Pearce [R] vs. Teague)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | October 4, 2010 | Dan Boyd

The showdown in New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District between Democratic Rep. Harry Teague and Republican challenger Steve Pearce is shaping up as a nail-biter.

Pearce, who held the southern New Mexico seat in the U.S. House from 2003 until 2009, has caught up to first-term incumbent Teague, according to a new Journal Poll.

Forty-five percent of the 2nd District voters surveyed Sept. 27-30 said they would vote for Pearce, while 44 percent supported Teague. The district wide survey results have a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

"We've got a classic close race on our hands," Journal pollster Brian Sanderoff said.

Undecided Democratic and independent voters could be pivotal in determining the race's outcome. Most Republican voters surveyed appeared to have already made up their minds.

The poll also showed 82 percent of Republican voters backing Pearce and 14 percent supporting Teague. Seventy percent of Democratic voters surveyed said they would vote for Teague and 16 percent said they would vote for Pearce.

"The thing that's keeping Teague in this race is he's pulling a similar amount of Republican support as Pearce is Democrat support," Sanderoff said.

Pearce should be winning this going away. The good news here is that he has gained support from the poll done in August and there is still a month to go.

But the idea that Republicans would support Teague is very disturbing. He's a rich oilman who supported cap and tax in the house last year. He jettisoned his 250 employees health care plan four days before last Christmas.

Free Republic New Mexicans living in District 2, get involved: Post a yard sign, get a bumper sticker, volunteer at local Republican headquarters, donate, talk with your friends, neighbors, coworkers. Teague is a typical two-faced Democrat who says one thing to the hometown crowd and acts another when voting in Congress.

I just can’t believe this. The majority of the people who live here in the 2nd District used to be smarter than this.

Teague won by running to the right of his Republican opponent... ..., But he always votes the way Pelosi tells him to, even if he betrays his own constituents... hell, even if he betrays his own employees and friends.....

Pearce always won the seat by ‘a landslide’ before he set his sights on the Senate....

I know we have had a lot of liberal fools move into this area, and have a lot of illegal alien invaders voting, due to Richardson’s criminal malfeasance, but if my neighbors ARE so idiotic to vote for Traitor Teague over Steve Pearce, I’ll never be able to look at them and see ‘good folks’ again.

There are other problems other than the ones you mentioned:

The most important being that there are some prominent Republicans, some quite liberal, who also operate in the oil and gas industry and elsewhere in SE NM. Some of them contributed huge sums of money and lots of active support for Bill Richardson against John Sanchez. I know of an instance where one such supporter sat on the Republican Executive Committee!

The only way to defeat NM Republicans of Opportunity and RINOS is for hardcorps Teaparty people to start next year to take over the Republican Party at precinct level at the May meetings. Organize your people with a preplanned agenda, take that meeting, elect your people to go to the regional meetings, do the same there, and then on to State. If not, a minority in the establishment ‘Pub organization will gut you and your candidates every time.

New Mexico conservatives, except for those in Dona Ana County, have their work cut out for them before the next presidential election. I wish I could be there to help.
