When I taught 4th grade, the curriculum included the planets. I knew that I couldn’t pronounce Uranus they way we kids used to, “your anus”, so I had to change the pronunciation to, “your a nus”.
So how did you deal with the cognitive dissonance with your pronunciation of "uranium"?
The old explanation of the pronunciation used to be "shut up! -- and straighten up in the back there!"
