Victor Davis Hanson: Barack Obama’s World of Them vs. Us
National Review ^ | October 01, 2010 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 10/01/2010 9:33:28 PM PDT by neverdem

On his latest speaking tour, the president has continued to talk about a traditional midterm election — in which the country assesses the sitting administration’s agenda — as if it were some epic Manichean struggle, something akin to race relations: Jim Crow, civil rights, and now, most recently, the abolition of slavery. At best, Obama is implying that a referendum on his policies is of similar magnitude to an existential battle like the Civil War; at worst, he implies by analogy that he is the crusading abolitionist and his opponents the forces of slaveholding evil. And all of this from someone who campaigned on the notion of unity and national healing.

I’m sorry, but opposing higher deficits or cap-and-trade is not the same as denying someone civil rights, and Obama, the Ivy League graduate, is not a Susan B. Anthony or Martin Luther King Jr.

In Obama’s world, there is no such thing as legitimate skepticism of his policies, even though they seem to millions to be radical and contrary to the notions of limited government, lower taxes, and personal freedom, notions that have long set us apart from our Western constitutional cousins in Europe. Instead (as can be seen in his latest Rolling Stone interview), those who oppose his policies — from the tea-party groups that resent his background to that destructive force on the national scene, Fox News — represent darker forces.

Looking back at 20 months, we see this Nixonian them-vs.-us world in which good progressives battle against those who make more than $250,000 per year; greedy doctors taking out tonsils; police who stereotype and act stupidly; Arizonan xenophobes who snatch kids out for ice cream; Islamophobes who would deny constitutional rights to Muslim moderates at Ground Zero; and racists who have traditionally stood in the way (mutatis mutandis, as they do now) of freeing the slaves.

All this psychodrama is beneath a president. It is a prescription for tearing the country in two — and about the dumbest thing you could do just weeks before an election.

Just the same old playbook... an election is coming so he is trying to whip his brainless zombie progressive army into a rabid froth.

It ain’t gonna work this time. 0bama is toast and he knows it. He will continue to dig himself in deeper. His true colors are showing more by the day and they’re awfully ugly. The rose colored glass won’t help.

This guy is a "community organizing" rabble rouser, sponsored and assisted his entire life, every step of the way, made to believe he was never wrong, and never crossed or challenged. Now that he's being opposed for the first time in his life by a large group of people he can't easily suppress or control, he's as helpless as an infant who has never faced adversity -- which, indeed, he hasn't. Considered this way, 0's behavior is entirely in character and predictable.

It's gonna be fun to continue to watch the meltdown before our eyes. Maybe the Dems will eventually get so desperate to stop their bleeding that they throw this guy under the bus, just as he himself has done, or has had done, to so many in his rise to power. This may wind up being their only alternative to so alienating the majority of the American people, that it takes them a generation or more to regain power.

Too late. My admittedly anecdotal references to public sentiment are that people are PISSED. Very, very PISSED. Like almost at the point of hoisting the Black Flag and telling them to come and take it pissed. The entire media/governmental complex has become a hated and mistrusted entity among large numbers of people.

It is to the point where people are actually sick of sharing this nation with the lying propagandists in the press and the Pelosi/Reed/Obama (not to mention Bush/McCain/Graham) total government tax and spend social engineers.

We are starting to fray badly, and it is not getting any better.

Obama’s right to present it as a Manichean battle - his only mistake is that he’s on the wrong side. The more he makes his adversarial mindset explicit, the more people come to realise he’s the enemy.

Remember, he got elected by obscuring the real divisions between different principles through obscuring it in a fog of hope and change and unity and earnest posed gazes into the horizon.

It reminds me of an election campaign in the UK...I forget the year but it was Heath (Conservative) vs. Wilson (Labour i.e. socialist.) Heath went to the polls with the slogan, “who governs Britain” - i.e. him or the unions. He lost, (I would have voted for him) because he forced people to pick sides, and the other side was more popular. Obama is falling into the same trap, thankfully.

Accidental or intentional?

“All this psychodrama is beneath a president.”

Then no progressive could ever be president. That psychodrama is the core worldview of progressives (despite that rich people are a key progressive demographic). Basically, he’s complaining that Obama is being a progressive.

King Hussein is so far inside his own drama that he believes every word he says.

He's a miraculous light worker battling the forces of evil and neglect: Fox News, the Tea Party, Republicans, Netanyahu, the Joint Chiefs, apathetic “progressives”, etc.

The egoism and the vanity of this self-worshiping lunatic are downright astonishing.

Freudian slip there, I think you meant Manchurian ;-)

Cheers!

Maybe, maybe not.

All of the latest polls seem to show the middle moving away from the Democrats and towards the Republicans.

This leaves Obama and the Dims in a pickle.

Do they repudiate the first 18 months of Obama’s administration, move to the center and repudiate all of the “progress” they have made in achieving their socialist goals or do they shift to attack mode and play to their hard left base.

Obama’s actions say that he has laid his bets on wipping up his base in the hopes that he can get out the vote on election day by playing to the base emotions of class and race hatred.

These are also Obama’s comfort zones. These are the campaign strategies that Obama cut his political teeth on. Here Obama hits his stride and plays on the emotions that have the power to bring out the Democratic base if it is possible.

Obama’s only possible errors here are that he may have begun to early; emotion has a short shelf life unless he can continue to feed the flames with new fictional abuses by the rich the base may grow bored with the “We hate the rich” mantra and stay home.

Second; he could continue to drive away the undecided center. Obama could further alienate the center with his class warfare rhetoric convincing them that Obama truly is taking the country so far to the left that we will become a European Socialist country just when the Europeans seem to be abandoning the European model as unworkable.

Losing is an epic experience, if like Obama, you smile, say something in keeping with the power structure, flatter people with the right remarks and hand gestures, pass yourself off as a suave sophisticate luminary, wearing the right suit and complexion for the right job. The halo of that experience only shows up later, when you are losing, as the pitch fork that skewers the enemy. Such it is with Prince Valiant — fighting the goblins of Mogadishu, hectoring Hector with a history for historical knowledge... it’s all epic and grand. But where are the little people, the elves and hobbits that make up America? Are they in chains? No. Are the blacks are still in chains, women still don’t have the vote? — according to Joe Biden TV was here only in 1937 and in 57 states — therefore, Obama wants you to understand the complexity, history and wonderment of it all... and vote democrat. He’s not asking for much. To save the world from the evil regressive forces — that’s YOU America — he needs your vote. Garden parties with Rick Nelson and the STP, B.o.B., stone canyon boys, it’s all the same. Paul McCartney would have showed up and it’s all the same. Epic forces and history, it’s his wondrous world — suits, smiles, handshakes, secret signs, black history and all — and your vote.

What Obama is, in the end, like the ghost in the mirror and America voting for him tells him that he is still alive even only as a reflection.

Barry has settled into a comfortable Bunker Mentality. As he haunts the halls of the White House at 3AM, he mumbles incoherently about his imaginary enemies. His actions over the past month reveal a man losing touch with reality.

GW, I checked on Manichean and VDH has used this as in the definition below....I rhink that he is v. careful w/ words??

Origin: Manichean describes the dualistic religious system of Manes, a combination of gnostic Christianity, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and various other elements, with a basic doctrine of a conflict between light and dark, matter being regarded as dark and evil.

“It is a prescription for tearing the country in two”

Last night, Mark Levin played an audio clip of the Kenyan Imposter referring to everyone who isn’t a dem/Progressive as “the other side”.

I immediately commented on that on the FR Levin thread.

If Obama were white, the dems would have tossed him overboard months ago. But since Libs are inherently racist, they can’t do that.
