Symantec security researcher Liam O Murchu (photo above) says he found the “05091979" date in the Stuxnet code, a possible link to the May 9, 1979 execution of Jewish Iranian businessman and philantropist Habib Elghanian.

Now comes O Murchu with this tittilating disclosure suggesting a direct link to Israel. However, security experts are cautioning against reading too much into anything deliberately left in the code by the Stuxnet authors because, at this level, there could be all kinds of decoys and misdirection.

In most of the world, 05-09-1979 is September 5, 1979.
Maybe in other parts of the globe, but not HERE. Here dates are given as MM/DD/YYYY. That would make it May 09, 1979. FWIW
There is a strong possibility that the virus was written outside of the US.
Plus, if the virus was written in Israel, the date would likely be designated using the Jewish calendar.
The only people left out of the party are the muslims, for whom this is the year 1431. They have yet to get to 1979.

Which leads me to believe, if anyone actually did want to hide that specific date in the code, they were probably an American who got sloppy, not an Israeli.

Proof positive of why they suffer from a fifteenth century mentality.
Iranians attacka a PPK stronghold. Maybe this is the Kurds’ revenge.
Or it could be the lot number of a Yokohama tire manufactured in the mid eighties, thus linking this worm to the Japanese.
Or 1992, if they can find design No. Y-814, which would link both Yokohama and Islam.
Real, chance, or fake.... This thing is really messing with people’s heads.
If they keep up the current charm offensive they might NEVER make it to 1979...
Quite a few years ago, when the cruise missile was first developed, one of the outcomes was redirection of weapons funding by the USSR. The USSR had to pull billions of dollars from offensive weapons development and pour it into developing radar systems capable of detecting cruise missiles.
The Stuxnet worm could very well have the same effect on the Iranians. If the Iranians have PLC’s that are affected by this worm, they’ll have to spend a lot of time and effort fixing the problem.
Very likely, this is money the Iranians don’t really have.
(I ran across an article a couple years ago mentioning the Iranians canceling a couple of cargo ships because they didn’t have the money to complete them)
