Our former NR colleague, Joe Sobran, passed away today after a long battle with a variety of ailments. He was relatively young, just 64, and while physically beaten at the end, he also departed spiritually triumphant.
Surely, in short order, there will be ample reflection much of it critical on the hyper-talented, hyper-controversial writer. There will be a recounting of his history at NR, the break, the following years, and Joes soured relationship with WFB (happily, they rekindled their friendship before Bill passed away). Good, lets discuss all that, and more. But later. Right now, let us, if only for a minute, pray for the repose of his soul, to hope: That he abides now with his old boss, and they together with our Creator. For the peace that proved so elusive in this lifetime, Joe, may you now have it.
He was one of my favorite political authors. Huge loss. RIP.
You can hear them sharpening the long knives to go after Joe, even though he just got done dying! He may have been wrong on some Israel-related issues, but he was no anti-Semite and no racist.
I remember a great Sobran column from c. 1986 (plus or minus a couple of years.) I don’t have it with me, but I remember it so well that I can almost quote it. So here is the paraphrase:
***A funny thing happened to the World Council of Churches delegation to the Soviet Union. They ran into some Christians. You can’t blame them. [They stuck to the official Soviet religious agents’ plans.] At one church they unfurled a banner, “We are a persecuted Church,” and were whisked away...***
RIP to a brilliant, if controversial mind.
I often wondered if, in his later years, he might have been plagued with Alzheimer’s. The change in him was not subtle.
So many brilliant people are lost to Alzheimer’s in their last years.
bttt
I first learned of Joseph Sobran by reading his columns in The Conservative Chronicle. That publication, along with National Review and the American Spectator which Rush Limbaugh promoted, was instrumental in my growth as a conservative.
Although I doubt you’ll do so, why not tell us what Joe Sobran did or said to qualify as “anti-semitic.” No doubt it was vile, unforgivable and utterly despicable.
Let’s hear what it was.
You can take a look at my link at post 24 and then migrate over to his website. The fact that you admit to knowing nothing about the guy but still insist on making value judgements is kind of sad.
Let the Oxfordian rot! I think we should now begin an examination into the question of the authorship of the "Sobran" articles. In fact, I very much doubt there ever was a "Sobran". I detect conspiracy!
Where few dare to tread. "Honest Abe" was the original corporate RINO, the archetypal Republican, who made his name doing eminent domain deals for barge companies and railroads at the expense of small landowners. I can only imagine what "just compensation" constituted back then.
Your Biblical ignorance is appalling.
What I read at your link was that Sobran believed that Jews exhibit a lot of ethnocentrisim, pursue their own interests, often at the expense of non-Jews, and that Jews wield a good deal of power in the U.S. All true. What was the anti-semitic part? That he didn’t think those were good things?
This must be why Jews voted 80% for that anti Israel Muslim named Barak Hussein Obama. Pursuing their ethno-centric interests
What was the anti-semitic part? That he didnt think those were good things?
He wrote anti Semitic crap. http://www.sobran.com/fearofjews.shtml I probably agreed with him on some other matters
The above quote shows Sobran's dementedness. This was at my direct link; the rest of Sobran's whacked out writings can be found at his website and elsewhere.
Don't expect me to parse out everything he wrote in the last 20 years, I'm assuming you can read for yourself. Or are you just being obtuse?
I also find it pathetic that so-called "paleoconservatives" are now eulogizing Sobran, given Sobran's support for open borders.

A conservative turned anarchist antisemite and America hatred deserves our pity, not eulogy.
Joesph Sobran was the PaleoConservative version of Pat Buchanan
Maybe the priorities are different between Jews in the U.S. and those elsewhere. In the U.S., a typical Jewish person may view a relatively cohesive white majority (i.e., traditional America) as their biggest concern, and vote accordingly leftward to reduce that perceived threat. But in Israel, they see neighboring Muslims as the main threat and vote to the right. Here, universalism, there ethnocentrism.
Wow, great essay. Thanks for the link.
Jews vote liberal because of a misguided sense of social justice. Open borders are not in Jewish interests but this how they vote. The new immigrants will vote for wealth re-distribution which generally hurts Jewish people
All these 3rd world immigrants will not be voting for pro-Israel candidates.
Back in the 1970’s Sobran did radio commentary as part of a CBS Radio series that included liberals and conservatives in rotation with other.
I remember him well from those days.
May Joe indeed Rest In Peace.
