Yes, not much to add to your comments. You have nailed it. My only comment is to disagree with you about the fact that no one wants big government. A very substantial percentage of the US population does in fact want big government. They may not be a majority but they are a substantial percentage of the population. This is why that class of people have always liked the welfare state. In addition to those who have leeched off the welfare system, we have a class of professionals who have figured out how to work the angles and make a very good living off big government. This would include bureaucrats and lots of crony capitalists. An example of a crony capitalist would be those businessmen who hope to make a killing off of cap-in-trade laws.
