Pelosi: 'I fully expect to be speaker of the House five weeks from now' By Michael O'Brien - 09/28/10 01:20 PM ET
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she still expects to have her job in five weeks after voters head to the polls.
Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House, whose job as speaker makes her third in line to the presidency, said she would retain that position.
I fully expect to be speaker of the House five weeks from now, Pelosi said at a NBC/Universal women's forum in Manhattan, as reported by the New York Times.
I have great confidence in my candidates, she said, and theyre doing just fine in their districts.
Pelosi's been confident to date about her party's fortunes going into an election cycle in which her party is expected to fare poorly. House Democrats in particular are in a tough position, fighting to stave off the kinds of losses that would hand control of the House to Republicans.
The GOP needs 39 seats to take back the House, and projection services show their candidates within striking distance of doing so.
Pelosi's words are also a confident prediction about the state of her own power in the House. Republicans have long criticized her since she became speaker in January of 2007, but some Democrats have also begun distancing themselves from the reliably liberal Pelosi.
Some centrists facing tough reelection challenges have refused to commit to vote for Pelosi for speaker, and other members, like Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.), have run advertisements distancing themselves from the speaker.
Republicans seem to suggest some opportunity from the internal Democratic discord, as well. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), the chief deputy whip for Republicans in the House, suggested over the summer that if Republicans come close to winning the majority but ultimately fall short, the GOP could poach dissatisfied Democrats to effectively rule the House.
What about 20 weeks from now, though?
WOW! Only five weeks 'til November? I go on R&R in November! I dare not think about that anymore yet....
Since we know the turnover of politicians doesn’t occur until January, maybe her bravado is addressed to her own caucus. She may fear they will throw her out of the leadership the day after the election?
Expectations/ disappointments Nancy. haha.
Someone get her a Pepsi...
Pelosi aboard the Titanic ...
“What iceberg? I fully expected to be in New York in 3 days.”
Hey San Fran Nan, don’t buy any green bananas!
I hope that she is not when the new Congress conveins, but, it would not surprise me if she was. never underestimate a Democrat on election day.
sounds like another veiled threat for some lame duck mischef
She will be. However, I wouldn't be making any plans for decorating the Speaker's office after the first week in January if I were her.
Oh my...another dumb journalist or SOTH...Is she on drugs or what?

SHOULD read: I fully expect to be Madame of a SF Whore House five weeks from now.
LOL,,,Anyone got that pic of Baghdad Bob? “There are no American troops inside Baghdad”
And therein lies the root of the problem...
Okay, I’ve got a question about Ms Pelosi.
Some photos of her make her look fresh and attractive, with almost no wrinkles, like she’s in her 40’s.
Then other photos make her look like a cotton t-shirt left wet in the bottom of the washer all night.
What does her husband/manservant really see when she goes to bed at night? Which one is the real Nancy?
In other words “The fix is in”.
I just love how this woman tells the truth just enough to make it look like she is saying something else. 5 Weeks after the election will NOT see the new House installed. That doesn’t happen for what... 8 to 9 weeks?
Um hum.
5 Weeks from now is the election. That date is the day Nancy gets her walking papers. In January, she will have to hand over the gavel to the new speaker of the house. She retains the position until the new house is seated.
So once again, she tells the truth, making it seem as if she is saying something she isn’t.
Nancy, YOUR DAYS WITH THE GAVEL ARE NUMBERED. I can’t WAIT to see you lose the gavel!!!!
>>I have great confidence in my candidates, she said, and theyre doing just fine in their districts.<<
Pelosi, I fully expect you to be in a jail cell.
