LOS ANGELES -- Democrat Jerry Brown has moved into a narrow lead over Republican Meg Whitman in their fractious contest for California governor, while his party colleague Barbara Boxer has opened a wider margin over GOP nominee Carly Fiorina in the race for U.S. Senate, a new Los Angeles Times/USC poll has found.
The Democratic candidates were benefiting from their party's dominance in California and the continued popularity here of President Barack Obama, who has retained most of his strength in the state even as he has weakened in other parts of the country. Support for Obama may play a key role in the Senate contest, one of a handful nationally that could determine which party wins control of the chamber.
At the same time, the survey showed, Republicans Whitman and Fiorina have yet to convince crucial groups of voters that their businesswoman backgrounds will translate into government success.
Brown, the former governor and current attorney general, held a 49 percent-to-44 percent advantage among likely voters over Whitman, the billionaire former chief executive at eBay.
Boxer, a three-term incumbent, led Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard, by 51 percent to 43 percent among likely voters in the survey, a joint effort by The Times and the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
Both Republicans were hamstrung by voters' negative impressions of them -- particularly Whitman, who has poured a national record $119 million of her own money into an advertising-heavy campaign yet has seen her unpopularity rise, the survey showed.
Still, in this year of political tumult, the Democrats were facing stiff challenges too. As they do nationally, Republicans in California held a fierce edge in enthusiasm among likely voters.

*REGARDLESS* of the *ACCURACY* of the polls, elections are always *RIGGED* in California!
In 2000 the *RAT* secretary of state *ADMITTED* that a *MILLION* votes for *BUSH* would *NEVER* be *COUNTED*!
California isn’t broke enough yet!
Well no one asked me who I am going to vote for and it ain’t gonna be Moonbeam.

FLASHBACK:Bustamante Has Big Lead on Schwarzenegger (LA Times poll)
please spare me this pathetric PUSH POLL from two farrrrr left front groups . The LA SLIMES and UDC. its geting desperate for the obama state media .
BS , the radical unions would not be speding millions if Whitman was Dem lite. spare me the astroturf.
exactly, do you recall when the LA Slimes chief editor was caught screaming “ get me all the dirt on arnold you have “ in the newsroom during a public tour !
What I see is a Dem party media in full push poll mode!!!!!
In will say the local media in Calif is veryyyyy hard left even the Rush clear channel affiliates like the one in Sacramento are amazing brazen far left.
I wish Carly and Meg would run more TV ads, I am bombarded with pro Boxer and Brown ads. LA county area.
IMHO the poll is not credible - the LA times is extraordinarily partisan.
However this is probably the end of the line for California. If Whitman wins, it will mean one more term of a governor who will veto the most fruitcake legislation which comes out of the Assembly.
But Republicans are leaving the state. Liberals (illegals) are moving in. The point of equilibrium is long past.
The slide will accelerate now.
At some point, chaos will ensue.
Reality check: California in NOT that far out there from the rest of America politically. After this so-called paradigm shift of an election, there will STILL only be a split Senate and a mildly Republican House that will be ineffective to roll back liberalism. America as a whole is so far off the rails that even a brutal recession can’t wake it up enough to ditch what’s ailing it.
Sadly, I was born here in CA and I will probably be moving to TX. It is not the natives, it is the invaders.
This state is mostly controlled by LA and Bay area. If you look at the red/blue map CA is mostly conservative being ruled by liberal population centers.
And who would believe the LA slimes?
Without the Boxer seat, the GOP won’t win Senate control, regardless of O’Donnell, despite all the fiery rhetoric from RINOs.
Will our side show up to vote
Is our side still their????Figured they would have moved out years ago.
Are there ANY brains left in California??? Does ANYONE WORK and not get paid by the Tax Payers??? If Carly doesn’t win and if Meg doesn’t win, Calif. can fall into the ocean AFAIC.
I'm in California and don't recall anything about ballots not being counted. Bush lost by about 1.3 million votes.
BTW, the Secretary of State from 1995-2003 was Bill Jones, a Republican.
Perhaps you should read the article, before commenting.
From the article:
The Los Angeles Times/USC poll was conducted from Sept. 15-22 by the Democratic company of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and the Republican company American Viewpoint.
I thought it already had been.
