California: Brown leads Whitman 49 percent to 44 percent in poll; Boxer widens gap
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 09/25/2010 | Catherine Decker

LOS ANGELES -- Democrat Jerry Brown has moved into a narrow lead over Republican Meg Whitman in their fractious contest for California governor, while his party colleague Barbara Boxer has opened a wider margin over GOP nominee Carly Fiorina in the race for U.S. Senate, a new Los Angeles Times/USC poll has found.

The Democratic candidates were benefiting from their party's dominance in California and the continued popularity here of President Barack Obama, who has retained most of his strength in the state even as he has weakened in other parts of the country. Support for Obama may play a key role in the Senate contest, one of a handful nationally that could determine which party wins control of the chamber.

At the same time, the survey showed, Republicans Whitman and Fiorina have yet to convince crucial groups of voters that their businesswoman backgrounds will translate into government success.

Brown, the former governor and current attorney general, held a 49 percent-to-44 percent advantage among likely voters over Whitman, the billionaire former chief executive at eBay.

Boxer, a three-term incumbent, led Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard, by 51 percent to 43 percent among likely voters in the survey, a joint effort by The Times and the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

Both Republicans were hamstrung by voters' negative impressions of them -- particularly Whitman, who has poured a national record $119 million of her own money into an advertising-heavy campaign yet has seen her unpopularity rise, the survey showed.

Still, in this year of political tumult, the Democrats were facing stiff challenges too. As they do nationally, Republicans in California held a fierce edge in enthusiasm among likely voters.

Don't lose heart yet:

"Brown, for example, trailed by 12 points among those most enthusiastic about voting this year. Boxer's lead reversed to a 17-point deficit among the most enthusiastic voters."

This is another poll, where they are trying to suppress Republican turnout.

Exactly! It's easy to say the hell with California but we're the ones that will ultimately pay the price.

Heh, it’s funny how California seems to be going in the opposite direction of America.

Our state is already toast, but having Brown and Boxer win would just be the worst thing ever. Those two are the worst kind of scum

RE: Just accept the fact that California is going to die.

The rush out of the Golden State has already started and will accelerate if both Brown and Boxer win.

SEE HERE :

http://jan.ocregister.com/2010/09/23/leaving-cal-list-grows-to-144-firms/45696/

EXCERPT :

Irvine consultant Joe Vranich, who has been compiling a list of companies leaving California because of the state’s anti-business environment, is now up to 144 companies that have departed in 2010, including 34 in Orange County.

In addition, he lists 51 companies (8 from Orange County) that left in 2009. That three-fold increase, Vranich says, is the tip of the iceberg that is California’s financial woes.

“Quite clearly, the exodus of businesses out of California continues. It makes sense for companies to reduce their California footprint considering the ample supply of attractive, lower-cost alternative locations. Unless California reduces its hostility toward business, we will see more commercial enterprises seeking friendlier locations in which to relocate entirely or at least place facilities there that used to be located here.”

Among the Orange County companies new to his list are Boeing, Kennametal Inc., Latex International, Multi-Fineline Elextronix Inc., NGK Spark Plug Co., Pipeline Software Inc., Smith Micro Software Inc. and Witt Heat Transfer Products Group, most of which have been previously reported by the Register. Vranich says Orange County may be over-represented on his list because news reports are one source of his information and the Register reports business comings and goings more than some publications.

Vranich doesn’t include in his list every company that opens a facility elsewhere. Here’s how he explains:

“I’ve excluded countless companies that are attempting to serve new territories or new customers, are expanding because the company is growing, or are acquiring companies located elsewhere. When events appear unrelated to California’s hostile business environment, I give the companies the benefit of the doubt and leave them off the list.

Which locations are benefiting from California’s exodus? Vranich says in a Fox&Hounds article:

* Texas
* Arizona
* Colorado
* Nevada
* Virginia
* Utah
* Other countries

“Businesses are shrinking their California footprint because high taxes and intense regulation damage their ability to compete,” Vranich says.

If CA elects Brown, they deserve everything that is coming to them—and then some.

After 19 years in beautiful Southern California, we followed my husband's job to Arizona a year ago. Motor-voter (tick a box on your Driver's License form that simply says ‘I am eligible to vote in California’ and you are automatically registered....no proof of citizenship necessary) ruined California. You need not show any ID to vote there. I am heartbroken for that beautiful state. My husband's company had been in SoCal for over 50 years. I hope the voters want to turn it around or it is indeed toast. More's the pity.

You hit the nail on the head - too bad a bunch of cry baby conservaties are spoiling the air and water for Fiornia and Witman. “I won’t vote for them because they don’t like REAL conservatives.” Gee wiz prolife and pro tax cuts is a pretty good start. Cut government and repeal Obamacare - sounds conservative enough from texas.

This poll is about encouraging voter turnout among the demoralized Democrat base.

Biased media poll???

Seems like a crappy outlier, or Californians are turning stupider.

RE: Heh, it’s funny how California seems to be going in the opposite direction of America.

Ordinarily, I would not be concerned with whoever takes over as governor in California. What happens to California locally does little to affect me.

Barbara Boxer is what bothers me. Her position and votes affect THE REST OF THE COUNTRY.

The only good news is that it looks like California will not get any more electorial votes. They may even lose some for 2012.

It does not look like an outlier to me. The trend is breaking AWAY from the Republicans in the Golden State.

I read that the ID of the parties in this poll leaned heavily Democratic-something like 54D and 35R. You know that’s not going to be the case Nov. 2nd.

"A Time/USC Poll" ______________________________________________________________ I knew before I opened the thread that it was a poll taken by an unreliable, liberal media outlet.

“Maybe California could be returned to Mexico, no questions asked.”

The irony is that what you say is eventually going to happen anyway (at least for the southern part of the state).

The only hope for conservative Euro Californians is to cut their losses and get out while they can. Not unlike being a Jew in Europe in 1936....

I live here and people are literally lunatics and have no idea where money comes from. They want to live on a giant planation and eat organic carrots while strumming a guitar stoned all night.

Schools preach Marx and the unions hold every Dim’s hopes and dreams, so the vicious circle is complete.

Millions of illegals, idiot greenies, I want out.

Motor Voter was a Cloward and Piven scheme to flood the voter rolls with Democrats (Socialists).

Clinton signed it, Glenn Beck shows them in the foreground during the signing.

Evil people, these Marxists.

I say we cut California loose and let it slowly float out to sea. Liberalism is a sickness for which there is NO CURE!
