Caribbean crime wave linked to US deportations
Associated Press ^ | September 25, 2010 | Mike Melia

The crime was horrifying enough — a nightclub owner, hacked to death with a machete, was found buried in pieces. But what really outraged people was that the accused killer had been deported from the U.S. to his native Grenada as a convicted felon.

As a foreign-bred criminal, the suspect never should have returned to the close-knit tropical nation, relatives of the victim and others said. Islanders called for more vigilance over deportees by the government, which says it needs help from Washington to handle the return of hardened convicts.

"I hope that my brother did not die in vain and something can be done to monitor these criminal deportees," said Gemma Raeburn-Baynes, a sister of the nightclub owner, Michael Raeburn-Delfish.

The United States has deported thousands of convicted criminals to the Caribbean annually since 1996, when Congress mandated that every non-citizen sentenced to a year or more in prison be kicked out of the country upon release. In all, the U.S. is responsible for about three-quarters of the region's returning criminal deportees, with the United Kingdom and Canada accounting for most of the other ex-cons arriving in the islands.

It's a phenomenon that also afflicts many parts of Central America, where street gangs that grew out of Los Angeles spread to the region through massive deportations. Brutal and powerful, the "Maras" are blamed for rampant violent crime, extortion and more recently acting as enforcers for drug cartels.

So, not only do these idiots think that we should solve the world’s employment problems, but we have to solve their criminal problems as well. These countries knew what they were getting back. they should have dealt with it themselves.

Better there than here. If they don’t like criminals, they should execute them on delivery.

So the AP would rather have Americans killed? I wonder when the American hating NY Times will pick on AP’s theme.

Though more covert than CNN and MSDNC, when will AP’s leader get his “machete” and be fired?

American citizens should have been hacked to death instead. Too bad we can’t get tough on illegals like Europe.

See, it's America's fault that there's so much crime in the hemisphere. If Republican President Reagan hadn't interfered in Grenada's politics, this wouldn't have happened. :') Thanks Zakeet.

The comments make great reading. 99% of them comment on how ridiculous this article is. With that sort of unanimity where clear criminality is involved, how come our government (historically both parties) has such a hard time enforcing immigration laws to protect us?

These problems are compounded by the issues involved.

—Many of these countries are so corrupt that many violent criminals can travel freely to the U.S. Some were never incarcerated in their native countries or bribed their way out of jail.
—Because of this sketchy paper trail and identity theft, many of these violent criminals can catch a plane to Miami or Orlando and live freely.
—This ongoing situation has already ruined nearly half of the state of Florida. Orlando will soon be Miami North.

Last month, a teen fresh from Puerto Rico hid in a local library and tried to knife a library worker. This occurred in a previously safe suburban neighborhood in Orlando. There are fewer safe neighborhoods in Orlando anymore. The law enforcement is either overwhelmed or looks the other way. Orlando has now become a safe place for drug running, immigrant smuggling, arms smuggling and money laundering. You now have stash houses and drug rendezvous points in what once were safe neighborhoods. Many small businesses are just fronts for money laundering or drug distribution points, just like the Mob.

It is so bad in Orlando now that the region is addicted to the flow of money brought in by this illegal activity. This is the point of no return for any city.

Our progressive friends would call this judicial justice. According to them, perhaps the U.S. judicial system and law enforcement should be just as corrupt as any third world country. That is what they want for this country. Redistribution of crime and corruption from other countries to the U.S.

Why do they think the US has to take care of what they produced - a deranged individual.

This also proves why “immigration” is no longer solely about immigration in the United States. It is about violent crime, violent criminals and violent criminal enterprises.

Too bad we no longer have a huge island somewhere on Earth to serve as a place for a penal colony for those who must be deported from the U.S., but whom are also very unwelcome in their home countries.

Yet the Progs still try to make illegal immigration about happy peasants crossing the border simply so they can make a meager wage picking our lettuce.

No.

Those days are over. Illegals today give a whole new meaning to “illegal” — as in criminal and violently so.

Because even for Republicans and conservatives, for a long time past its prime, the historical accurate, romantic view of immigration persisted -- the poor coming here to work hard for a better life and to take their shot at the American dream.

The Rats transferred this wonderful idea to something completely different -- ILLEGAL immigration. Yet the romantic ideals persisted -- these ILLEGALS were, as I posted earlier, simply happy peasants coming over the border for the chance to work hard and make their lives -- and the lives of their chillen! -- better by "doing jobs Americans are too snobby to do."

Even that might have been somewhat accurate a few decades ago. But more and more illegal immigration has been for the purpose of committing crimes and furthering criminal enterprises.

It has resulted in a horrific crime wave in our southwestern states.

The key to getting the approriate action here is for both parties to own up to the reality that illegal immigration is a CRIME problem. Here, apparently, and when these people are deported, in their home countries.

Exactly, back in the olden days, the SEASONAL workers came up to the Central Valley in CA, worked their butts off and went home to their families. The days of the hard workers are OVER.

So how about this, there being no suitable place for a penal colony in existence at this point in history:

How about the U.S. and these other countries enter into an extradition arrangement that specifies certain dispositions for non-US citizens convicted of various crimes in the U.S.

Then let’s put some old ships (big ones) out to sea and make those floating “penal colonies” where participating countries send their convicted felon citizens to rot.

So let’s say Columbia is a party to the extradition treaty. A Columbian is convicted of murder in the U.S. and deported. The agreed upon disposition kicks in and, instead of being deported to Columbia, the man is dropped off at one of these floating penal colonies, inprocessed as a prisoner, and spends his time (or life) there.

The only security concerns would be keeping escape or assault craft away. Otherwise, the colonists would get three hots and a flop and whatever recreation they wanted to participate in.

So long as thorough searches were made of each individual boarding, and so long as there was no corruption of staff (which should be rotated onboard in staggering shifts (not working with the same staff members all the time) every two weeks, say, to avoid this), it should be relatively rare to have a drug problem onboard.

Some of these ships can hold several thousand people.
