WASHINGTON -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is the early frontrunner among potential Republican candidates for president in 2012, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll.
While former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin commands the national spotlight, turning out "tea party" activists and headlining rallies, for now it's Romney who claims the lead at 25 percent, months before an official field takes shape. Palin, GOP nominee John McCain's 2008 running mate, took second with 18 percent.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tied for third place with 16 percent. Finishing out the pack were Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty with 6 percent, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels with 4 percent and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour with 2 percent.
The survey of 815 registered voters, conducted last Tuesday through Thursday, also highlights more concerns for President Barack Obama and for the Democrats, who are fearful of losing their congressional majority in the November elections.
On the surface, Americans are divided over whether they want Republicans to take over Congress: Forty-eight percent say yes and 46 percent say no.

Notes, they were registered voters, no party preference and not even whether they were likely voters.I hate polls like this! Exactly. How anyone can give credence to a poll that doesn't have definitive sampling data is beyond me.

Well, I’m sure that’s fair and unbiased. A merger of left wingnuts.

I really do not want to get stuck with either one as the nominee, but would support either one over Obama.

Ahh... The I will not vote for McCain 2008 strategy.
How did that work out?

It’s very, very early. If Romney runs again, there will be plenty of time to point out his record.

I'm not saying that I think Palin should run, and I am not saying that she should be president....
but how come we get stuck with ROmney?.......we have Scott Brown....we have Joe Miller.....we have Christie....we have Demint....we have so many that are solid conservatives, well spoken ,. bright and articulate...
have the dims again selected our next candidate?....just like they did with McCain and Dole?

Rudy’s fairly RINOish but he is light years better than Myth Romney, stinking Amnesty McCain and Newt.

I notice all these polls include Huckabee whom I would be surprised to see running again after that Seattle scandal. If Huckabee's out of the picture, I'm guessing a significant portion of that moves to Palin.
It would be interested to see a poll where Huckabee is not one of the choices.
Then again, I'm not sure the media *wants* anyone to think Palin is the front-runner.

Don’t worry, Palin, the only true conservative who has a chance to win, will be in first by November 2012.
