LA Times: GOP's 'Pledge to America' offers no answers to serious problems
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 24, 2010 | Editorial Staff

Well, you can't say you don't know what Republicans stand for anymore.

If the "Pledge to America" unveiled Thursday were a genuine attempt to solve the country's economic troubles by living up to GOP principles of low taxation and spending, we might find more in it to like. Instead, it's a manifesto of meaningless bromides served up to please "tea party" activists, disingenuous attacks on Democrats and President Obama, and policy prescriptions that are at best impractical and at worst deeply counterproductive.

What Republicans agree on, based on the key elements of the pledge, is that Obama's healthcare reform law must be repealed and that the economic recovery measures favored by both Obama and President George W. Bush have failed and must be halted.

Meanwhile, their approach to stimulus spending and bank bailouts — to halt payment of billions of dollars in stimulus grants and cancel the Troubled Asset Relief Program — would stall one of the strongest forces sustaining the economy and probably eliminate more jobs than it would produce. And their plan to extend the Bush tax cuts even for the very wealthy, although it might result in a small uptick in business growth, would greatly widen the deficit they claim to want to narrow. If this is the agenda a new Republican congressional majority would pursue, prepare for a bumpy 2011.

HOPEY CHANGEY offered no answers at all. Socialists cannot be honest and up front about their agenda.

When did the GOP establishment start trying to please the Tea Partiers?

They haven’t as far as I know.

Shouldn’t the FR have a special Comedy Forum for LAT and NYT articles?

At first, I could not understand at all why the rinos (no, not the conservatives or the Tea Party advocates...the rinos) decided to produce this pile of garbage.

Then I remembered: by in large, the rinos are leaderless, thoughtless, uninspiring, spineless, centerists lacking the ability to find their own rear ends by sitting on it.

If the best the present rino's could do was to "offer up" a repeat of the newt model of yesteryear, they deserve to be thrown out on their collective ear.

Apparently, the "pledge" is indeed the best they can do. They need to be removed.....at once.

And don't think the dem/lib/prog/pops don't know it!

Shocked, shocked to learn that the LA Times recoils, like a vampire from garlic, at even a tepid statement of fiscal sanity. Just imagine if the Pledge had been even stronger, as many conservatives hae wished!

these maggots advocated the expenditure of a trillion borrowed dollars for no good purpose... then excoriate the broke and busted taxpayer for not being able to pay the tab...

if you owe the bank a million, you have a problem.

if you owe the bank a trillion, they have a problem.

suckers...

Liberals don’t get it, do they?

The entire nation is in chaos about the very issues Conservatives have addressed.

The pledge is a clear and concise, point-by-point challenge to the existing Liberal agenda and the Liberals can’t think of any way of responding to the pledge other than their usual bitter and counterproductive smear of ANYTHING the opposition suggests.

They are REALLY out of touch with the situation. If Liberals had anything half as well conceived or clearly stated, THAT would be different!

I presume, democrats’ reelections are those “serious problems”, to which Republicans in opinion of the LAT have no answers.

Gosh, I am shocked! The LAT was critical of Pledge to America? Who would have thunk it?

The “Pledge” seems a little wordy for a campaign document.

How about just (in no particular order):

— NO EARMARKS
— NO NEW TAXES
— NO TRIALS FOR TERRORISTS
etc.?

The LAT editors did a word search for “raise taxes on the rich” and “spend more on the less fortunate” and when the editors didn’t find them, they obviously concluded that the pledge offered no solutions.

Gotta love the obama media.
They openly campaigned for a guy who is wrecking the economy. Cash strapped people quit buying papers. Papers have to lay off employees. The media then ups the rantings for their boy. He nationalized another industry and raises taxes. Less papers are purchased. Papers have to lay off more employees.
These boneheads can’t even see that they are actively participating in their own demise. Keep it up LA times. Pretty soon you will be down to small business size. Then you are toast.
