Democrats Worried Jon Stewart Rally Will Hurt Them On Election Day
Charlotte Conservative ^ | September 20, 2010 | Staff

Posted on 09/21/2010 4:46:28 AM PDT by IbJensen

Although the media took last week’s announcement of comedian Jon Stewart’s "Rally to Restore Sanity" like it was manna falling from heaven, some Democrats are concerned it could hurt them in the upcoming midterm elections.

Scheduling such an event on the Saturday before Election Day, when field operatives should be diligently working on Get Out The Vote efforts in their districts, could be tremendously counterproductive.

On the other hand, as Politico’s Ben Smith noted Monday, there’s already a big Democrat rally planned in October:

Stewart hasn’t mentioned that labor groups and other institutional Democratic organizations are already planning a big Washington rally to counter Beck: The One America rally on October 2, which has been struggling to get the kind of attention Beck does. [...]

"Midterm elections are about turnout and as has widely been reported, there is an intensity gap in this election, with the Republican base more motivated than the Democrats’. Some of that gap can be closed with an aggressive ground campaign — we can make up 2-3% in a given race by talking to people at their doors and on their phones," emails veteran labor Democratic consultant Steve Rosenthal. "I love Jon Stewart — rarely miss the show, but to the extent that some people who will attend his rally would otherwise be involved in GOTV efforts this is not helpful."

Nation editor Chris Hayes e-mailed Smith:

First: It’s hard to imagine lots of democratic [sic] politicians showing up to a left equivalent of Glenn Beck’s rally (and I wonder how many will be at the *actual* progressive march on October 2nd), but more than that is [sic] puts our current ideological predicament in stark terms. On the right, a large, well-funded, organized, ideologically zealous movement dedicated to a genuinely reactionary vision of America. On the other side? A very gifted satirist calling for everyone to just chill. If I landed here from Mars and took this in and was asked to bet on who’s going to have more political success, it would be a no-brainer.

Something else lost in the discussion is that this event is scheduled for the day before Halloween.

Makes you wonder what kind of anti-GOP costumes will be on display and how that will go counter to the "million moderates march" motif.

Think about all the George W. Bush, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity dolls likely to be burned in effigy in our nation’s capital as organizers futilely ask, "Can’t we all just get along?"

Doesn’t present a picture of sanity, does it?

Of course, with two liberal Clintonistas involved in putting this event together, they’ll likely have folks patrolling the crowd to control such imagery.

Nobody’s better at falsely presenting a "moderate" persona than a former member of that administration.

Oh yeah, sure, I want to see the Clintonistas try to tone down this rally. Who is gonna ask the Black Panthers to take off the para-military garb & leave the weapons at home? Who is gonna silence the “Death to America” crowd & La Raza? Who is gonna ask the perverts to cover their pierced nipples? Who is gonna ask the muslims to stop praying? (Maybe they need a “temporary” mosque on the Mall).

The day before Halloween! Oh boy! Every weirdo & pervert is gonna attend in their “finest” outfits. I do hope there will be many hours of video of this freak show. The signs alone should convince any READER that the left is a bigoted loony bin. Don't forget the shots of the aftermath: piles of garbage that make the Mall look like a landfill, & the 100 million dollars it takes the SEIU to clean it up.

All this should make up the minds of many “fence sitters” & put the TEA Party movement & Conservatives over the top in the elections.

Thanks, in advance, Jon Stewart!

I think pictures of past loony rallies and pictures of Tea Party rallies should be used in political ads. Just show the pictures and say these are the people that support Coons (or whomever) and these are the people who support O'Donnell(or whomever.) Then have a voice over ask "Which group do you think shares your interests? Which group would you rather have work for you?" Leave it at that.

Show the anti war folks, the gay parades, the black panthers, the anarchists, the illegals, and the tea partiers. The media would go nuts, because the Dems are never compared to their most active supporters.

It will be a great A/B comparison,
especially the condition of the grounds following the “rally”.

“They’ll leave cans, bottles, cig butts and other debris everywhere.”

And: Booze, beer, & wine bottles, NEEDLES, CONDOMS & stuff I can't even imagine. The Mall will be a total bio-hazard.

If I were a videographer, I don't believe I would miss this event.

“Progressive” had to be abandoned shortly after the Wilson era, because it began to mean “fascist”, which was the true ideology of the progressives then and now.
They became “liberals” for quite a while, and that now means Marxist, so they’re going to try to be “progressive” again.

And since it will be the looniest of the left on display and if people see that it will help the Republican cause, you know the DBM won't touch it with a ten foot pole, so it will get zero publicity.

That’s what I’m talking about. The contrast with the Beck Rally will be HUGE! The “Rally to Restore Sanity” will prove, once again, that the Left is truly insane.

There is not a chance in Hades that this rally will resemble the calm, clean, respectful, God loving, patriotic rally that Beck held. That would be totally out of character for the Left. A riot is far more likely.

On the following Tuesday, anyone with a lick of common sense & decency, having seen this freak show, will vote for conservative candidates.

I know it is trite, but true, that “A picture is worth a thousand words”. Let’s hope the timing is perfect.

Stewart and Colbert’s audience demographic is primarily college kids and kids in their 20s. I bet 1 in 5 that attends the rally will be too tired and hung over to vote on tuesday anyway.

No doubt. But it's also a very convenient way to explain away the lunatics and freaks they know will be there in force. Any inconvenient image or message or behavior will be the work of "Halloween revelers." Lighten up! It's all in good fun! An American tradition!

You ever notice that every single Progressive cannot write an intellectually honest factual sentence.

I've yet to see a leftard write a simple declarative sentence.

Very good point you have made, Eroteme.
Halloween is the absolute favorite holiday of a majority of bizarre leftist weirdos.
Anything über-offensive will be dismissed as Halloween antics.

Self absorbed white kids telling each other how much better than they are than the “wrong kind of white people.” This rock concert will have less “diversity” than a croquet match.

They need to have a giant puppet of a vampire octopus like you see at all the other lefty rallies...That’s always a hit.

One bit that the Daily Show did that I did like was one where he satirizes the people who bring these giant puppets...That we should give them power because of use of such a powerful argument. It was ‘obvious’ they could solve the world’s problems if they just had better puppeteers, better puppet-masters...

So, I want to see this rally and I want to see Jon riding the giant vampire octopus puppet answer questions with the sincerity and gravitas that moment requires.

I say 5 people show up. That’s Jon plus 4 to hold up the puppet.

Double that...really, because there will be at least 3 news crews covering it. And then they can green-screen in the crowd behind him.

If any numbers of note show up, The MSM will cover it.................

I think that is the idea. In a way, Stewart and Colbert not only parody Beck, they are the same:

White guys with TV shows, who use their shows to promote their own events. And just like TV commentator Glenn Beck has been likened to everything from political leader to televangelist, now everybody's trying to interpret, maybe even own the Comedy Central rallies.
