Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who has bucked the establishment to support tea party candidates, said Sunday that his party is dead if it wins a majority this fall and doesnt stick to conservative principles.
Republicans held majorities in both chambers, and George W. Bush was in the White House when DeMint moved from the House to the Senate in 2005. But he said the party didnt live up to its promises.
Republicans didnt do what we said we were going to do, he said Sunday on CNNs State of the Union. We spent too much, we borrowed too much. And frankly, if we get the majority again, even if its just in the House, and we dont do what we say, I think the Republican Party is dead.
When asked about his declaration last week that electing conservative candidates is more important than winning a majority, he said the important thing is spending. Let me clarify what I mean by conservative, he said. Im just talking about common-sense people who dont think balancing a checkbook is a radical idea. Thats what were looking for now, because the people in Washington have clearly gotten out of control in both parties.
The quickest way to a majority, the quickest way to 60 votes in the Senate, is to have Republicans who stand on principle, he added. Nothing right wing; what Im talking about is where mainstream America is, and its just common sense.
He conceded that the chances of winning a majority in the Senate in 2010 may not be that great, but he deflected the criticism that his support for primary challengers against GOP incumbents was hurting the partys chances in November.
The only reason we have a chance at a majority now is a large part for the candidates Ive been supporting. ... If the Republican Party in the Senate was now symbolized by Arlen Specter and Charlie Crist, we would not have the energy behind our candidates anywhere in the country.
Of possible interest.
. . . and Grahams!

I have been worried about a candidate for 2012. I’m not worried anymore. They are stepping up to the plate bigtime!
No more excrement sandwiches! McCain was the last one we’re gonna choke down and that’s only ‘cause it came with a side of Sarah.
RINOS will guarantee an ObamaCRAT victory in 2012.
I declined to answer further and inferred as such.
The ObamaCRATS figure they'll be around in 2012 to pick up the fumble and score a touchdown.
Our only hope: Elect true conservatives, not RINOS. RINOS will guarantee an ObamaCRAT victory in 2012.
Sounds like Demint is not a big fan of the ‘Gang of 14’, the ‘Republican Senate Country Club Leadership’, and the ‘Architect’.
what i see is more house cleaning come 2012 if gop don’t stand on principals
HOORAY Jim DeMint!
We can’t effect things without control of the House and Senate...and that means Conservatives - not RINOs. The presidency will take care of itself after that. Heck, even if Obama is re-elected with both houses out of his control, he will be stymied until the next election.
The Presidency is the least of our worries at this point. He can NOT control spending if Republicans control both houses. Even if he tries to bypass funding, Congress can withhold funding. First things first...
Yes, please include Linsey Graham in that list - OUT!
I doubt I am the first to make this remark, but I think Sen. DeMint is running for President.
This guy is good! We really need an army of DeMints working for a few decades to straighten out the mess the socialists and internationalists have done to our country.
I caught parts of the DeMint interview with Candy Crowley on CNN. He was excellent! She could not trap him at all.
No more Olympia Snowjobs either.
The point is this: RINO’s will kill us now, then, anytime, and are worse than the DemoCRATS because unlike the CommieCrats, RINO’s are wolves in sheep’s clothing.
Arh! The horror of the past decade! Maybe a firing squad can be arranged for any remaining of that corrupt power hungry group. Of course, I’m talking about “You’re fired” type of squad.
