Hollywood Feminism: Eat Pray Love … Vomit Rinse Repeat

I saw Eat Pray Love over the weekend. I can’t remember the last film I walked out of but I certainly wanted to walk out of this one. I stayed because I want to know what is going in the world. I know now and it’s not good.

The cinema was half full, almost all were women.

I have taken care for a decade or so NOT to take any action that will cause money to flow into Julia Roberts’s pockets. That includes paying to see, or renting, anything involving her. The film could be “Citizen Kane” — and it appears that it sucks, mind you — and I still would only see it for free, if at all.

Doesn’t mean I think she is a bad actress. Despising her personally is another issue.

“The cinema was half full, almost all were women.”

Sounds like it was half empty ... are you sure it was half full?

I think she IS a bad actress, politics aside. She plays the same role in every movie she makes.

My wife and daughter almost talked me in to going to see this.

Thanks for posting. You saved me 2 hours of my life I would have never been able to retrieve.

I wont give any actors any protion of the little money I have after we are taxed to death especially since most of them say we dont pay our fair share. So no movies for me

It is true she has demonstrated a very limited range. Even Tom Cruise has played a villain at times. Where has Roberts played anything but a Mary Sue? (Sometimes with breasts.)

During the Dirty Thirties we all flocked to the theaters like never before or since to see beautiful people in glamorous problems in high-class settings.

Well, it’s way too expensive now, but I’m sure Netflix and the local library’s DVD selection will make up for that.

I miss the Julia Roberts of “Mystic Pizza” or “Mary Reilly”.

It’s the star malaise. The higher they rise in the Hollywood food chain, the fewer risks they want to take. Even though they could afford to work for free the rest of their lives.

My favorite one is where he plays the young, cocky guy.

Love the title. I called it Eat, Pray, Puke.

She’s AWFUL! I can’t stand how she talks through her nose! And those horse teeth. Ugh!

“Under the Tuscan Sun is the experience Eat Pray Love wants to be. Both feature a woman writer with a broken marriage who wants a change, goes abroad, and eventually finds another love. However, in UtTS the woman is dumped by a husband she would prefer to keep. The movie features Italian food and its significance, but this is lovingly treated, not cliched. Instead of indulging herself, the protagonist cooks for others. Instead of a phony-baloney spiritual journey, the main character finds solace by taking care of those around her. While not a great film, it’s altogether a much more uplifting experience than apparently EPL is.”

Julia Roberts couldn’t polish Diane Lane’s pumps.

I told my wife that if she was going to see this movie, that I would be doing something else that night...like going to the tavern to play some darts and pool.

Eat, Drink and Play. Now you're talking...

Why would you see this movie? I had the misfortune of reading the book and knew better. It was a pick from my book club and there was a 100% consensus - it sucked.

I always liked her gawky, unconventional beauty. And that horse-laugh. It’s her choice of roles that puts me to sleep.

I just reviewed her filmography on Imdb.com. Jeezuz! She hasn’t taken a chance since “Erin Brokovich”. I did like that one—a nasty character you end up rooting for.

I didn’t see the movie but I read the book. I read it simply because I like travel books. So, in that respect it was ok.

Other than that, I found the main character rather pathetic. 30 something, divorced, no children and fully self absorbed. The kind of self absorption land searching for one’s self that intolerable or even expected at 22. Not so much at 35.

I look forward to the day when actors can be fully replaced by CGI or better yet some kind of android with limited AI. Just enough to be an actor. It takes very little real intelligence to be one.

Julia Roberts' new flick.

A first hint. When I read some airline/travel promotion based on this (without seeing it) I realized it was no good.
