If gun owner poses no threat, he should get his collection back(NJ)

John Brek was in deep trouble after two Continental Airlines employees at Newark Airport told police he’d made comments about cutting a hole in a fence so he could shoot the arriving President Obama. But authorities later dropped the most serious charges that Brek made terroristic threats and possessed a stolen rifle. The 56-year-old Linden man ended up pleading guilty only to harassment, for causing inconvenience, annoyance and alarm — not to the president, but to the pair of worried employees he’d been talking to. Brek, a guard at the airport at the time of that presidential visit in October, says he was only pointing out safety breaches during a lunchtime chat and was misunderstood. When police later found his collection of more than 40 guns, all but one of them were registered. Brek said he didn’t realize that last gun, bought by his father, was stolen. Authorities backed off from the original felony charges, deciding Brek didn’t pose a major threat. Psychiatrists for both the state and the defense agreed, finding that he is normal. But a judge in Newark still refused to return the gun collection to the avid deer hunter, who said he inherited them from his father and grandfather. A world with no guns in it would be ideal, but under our laws, you can’t deprive a citizen of his right to own a gun if he’s not considered a threat. The judge acknowledged that Brek doesn’t pose a threat — agreeing to lift a restraining order that had prohibited him from having any contact with Obama or the White House — but said the gun collection would still be confiscated because “we live in a different world” after 9/11.

"So why take his gun collection away?"

To prove that as the omnipotent agent of the State, you can do what you want to people you dislike?

Or, the Marsupial wants one or more of those guns.

Ditto for the uniformed thugs, a prosecutor, a prosecutrix, ad nauseam.

Suit time!

Oops! Should be “Marsupial Magistrate”, not marsupial.

>> causing inconvenience, annoyance and alarm

If Mrs. Tick ever gets wind that these are criminal offenses, my goose is cooked!

I don’t care if some government official thinks you pose a threat or not!

The only reason to take away guns is possibly felonies.

Everything else is subjective nonsense.

If you are a NJ gun owner, you'd better mind your P's and Q's. They have all kinds of reasons/excuses for denying your right to own or possess a firearm.

How very true. Living here I think you are better off not having legal guns. Not that I break the law. I wouldn’t do that. But they take your guns away for any reason, (if you can even get a gun license) they can make up. I think sometimes it is because the police want them or a judge. I’ve heard stories about antique guns being taken for silly reasons & they were just collections. At the very least if they take them they ought to give you fair value for them.
