Jill Stanek: GOP establishment vs. tea party on abortion
WorldNetDaily ^ | 9/15/10 | Jill Stanek

Posted on 09/15/2010 4:18:14 PM PDT by wagglebee

Two conservative GOP leaders with presidential aspirations, Mitch Daniels and Haley Barbour, both recently stated that they think the GOP should ignore social issues in lieu of fiscal issues.

Some think such chatter is a concerted effort emanating from establishment Republicans anxious to win over/hold on to independents heading into the 2010 and 2012 elections.

Indeed, the Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that the much-touted GOP book released that same day, "Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders," is "a manifesto of fiscal conservatism" that "avoids the hot-button social issues, including abortion and gay rights, which have been featured in previous GOP campaigns."

In addition, the Republican National Coalition for Life reports that the Republican's upcoming 2010 version of the "Contract with America" currently excludes any mention of Life issues whatsoever. RNC4L writes that pro-life stalwart Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, is battling for the GOP to include at a minimum a pledge to defund Planned Parenthood, the United States' largest abortion provider.

I get really, really tired of the constant, senseless battle with Republicans to uphold the sanctity of human life.

I understand fiscal concerns are foremost on American minds, but that doesn't mean the preborn baby should be thrown out with the political bath water.

Social issues comprise the foundation of fiscal issues. Voters should be educated about this.

The GOP will win, and win Big with the Reagan Model: strong and vocal support on the following general issues:

1. Limited Government 2. Social Issues 3. Military Issues

Ignore this model, and the outcome of any election cycle is in jeopardy!

Exactly, Reagan understood that conservatism rests on three equally important legs: fiscal conservatism/limited government, social conservatism and strong national defense; without any of these legs (as evidenced by Barry Goldwater’s failure), conservatism fails.

Social issues comprise the foundation of fiscal issues. Voters should be educated about this.

Social issues also comprise the foundation of a candidate's character. Voter education is required on this matter as well.

More than FIFTY TWO MILLION brothers and sisters, daughters and sons, producers, consumers and taxpayers have been “terminated” by murderous procedures.

No wonder we have a falling economy and a demographic winter..... but most important, we have innocent blood on our hands for our apathy and silence by allowing the media and the pols to define abortion as a wedge social issue.

“Reagan understood that conservatism rests on three equally important legs: fiscal conservatism/limited government”

Ronald Reagan demolished fiscal conservatism and limited size of government.

Great actor.

Time for a lesson for Barbour and Daniels ~ don't start sounding like Special Ed.

The country is in tight straights and any funny stuff will be frowned on. Just be glad we are having another election rather than the dispatching of a people's militia to pacify the Democrats.

You forgot that for most of Ronaldus Magnus’ term the Democrats controlled the Congress.

The GOP is looking at the positions of their candidates, probably sees too many prochoicers out there. Might make it hard to sell a prolife message.

Best thing for socons to do is make sure you primary out the prochoicers. Tea party primaried out the guys they didn’t like. You have no prochoicers you have no one to object to a prolife plank.

I’ve noticed that the socons really really like the “saying things I like to hear” part of the political process.

It’s important to you that you get to wear the “official position on abortion” I’m Prolife, but the way to go here is to primary out the prochoicers. Find your favorite prolife senator and hype them.

You forgot that for most of Ronaldus Magnus’ term the Democrats controlled the Congress.

The left had complete control of the House (where ALL spending bills originate) for Reagan's entire term and the Senate for all but the first two years (it was during those two years that Reagan got his tax cut passed and that set the stage for the greatest economic expansion in history).

Proving that tax cuts allow the economy to grow with the added benefit that tax revenues increased due to the expanding economy.

The only problem was, Congress did not cut spending.

GWB proved the tax cut/tax revenue link again, and again spending is what got us in trouble.

1. yes - top priority
2. yes, but might want to take a look at all things that would be considered important social issues and instead of banning everything we might not like, look back at 1. Abortion is something that should be kept. Gays and trannies and all that icky stuff. Keep that in there. We’re opposed to abortion and the gay agenda. Yes, primary those against those. But the other stuff, the pot and whatever else, just makes Republicans look like nanny staters just like the Dems.
3. Strong national defense. Yes. Hawk. Yes. Neocon. No.
We would get a lot of voters we lost with the Iraq war if we could come up with a foreign policy that allows us to be kickass without being at war constantly in the middle east.

Barry Goldwater ignored social conservatism. The left had already pushed prayer out of school, was pushing contraception and the push for abortion was certainly starting.

Goldwater would later say that he didn’t consider abortion to be a conservative issue.

It always amazes me when people label themselves “Goldwater Conservatives or “Goldwater Republicans.” The truth is that Goldwater was the GOP’s McGovern, Mondale and Dukakis all rolled-into one.
