I never bought the LCS idea. With the weapons and sensors we have I don’t understand a need to get in close.
Precisely. Why design a ship to specifically operate within easy range of land-based, sea-skimming missiles like the Exocet?
You can "draw fire" to locate the launchers with something much cheaper -- possibly unmanned (without risking human lives)...
Gotta admit, thought that those LCSs look like fun toys...

The LCS recently failed tests against simulated Iranian naval attacks.With each change in Iranian tactics the LCS had to return to port to change out it modular package to address the new type of threat presented by the simulated Iranian naval force.
The Zumwalt 1000 DDG made much more sense than does the LCS but SECDEF Wally Gates, a little take on a KC icon, killed off.
Close is a relative term. We have destroyer standing off shore by a few thosaund yards to give gun support. The LCS was to be a missle platform, ASW platform, anti-aircraft platform, and others. The drawback was that the platforms are modular and must be changed out in port for each mission.
The ship did not all of these capabilities available at one time.
