Delaware Senate race moved to Lean Democrat
Rothenberg ^ | September 14, 2010 | Stuart Rothenberg

Christine O’Donnell’s upset over Cong Mike Castle in the GOP primary dramatically alters Republican prospects for November in Delaware. Castle had broad appeal, including to independents and even Democratic voters, while O’Donnell’s appeal is limited to tea party conservatives. Lacking an impressive resume and unlikely to garner significant national Republican support, O’Donnell clearly looks like an underdog against New Castle County Executive Chris Coons (D), who is suddenly transformed to the favorite in the general election.

While tea party activists are jumping for joy at the primary results, it’s Democrats who will have the last laugh in Delaware.

We’re moving the race from Lean Republican to Lean Democrat.

When you think about it, Pyrrhic victories are dumb.

Let’s identify the enemy and keep the battle lines clean and neat.

NO RINOS!!!

Let the voters make a clear choice between socialism or free market... between post-American globalism or returning to the principles that made America great.

Country clubbers can put up their money and shut up. True Conservatives are driving this bus!!!

On the campaign I see.

Let's see, she's had the Tea Party endorsement and substantial backing for how long and came up how far in that time?

To declare the situation static under those circumstances is so incredible as to demonstrate adverse intent.

I am all for true conservatives, but when a political movement cannot detect the difference between a Joe Miller/Marco Rubio/Ken Buck/Nikki Haley vs a Christine O’Donnell... not a good sign.

LOL. Let ‘em move it.

Don’t look now, but the seat was Biden’s and I think he’s a democrat.

At least if Christine wins, we’ll have a conservative in the Senate from Delaware instead of a turncoat, pro-abortion, career liberal, fossil incumbent politician with an “r’ behind his name.

I’m not as prepared to write off the tea party candidates as you seem to be. The TV ads against the Democrats are going to be DEVISTATING, whearas the Republican party lost all credibility of being fiscally responsible under the GWB administration. Obama’s mob have displayed an almost insane lack of fiscal common sense and they will pay a heavy price.

Have you seen the uncharismatic Chris Coons? He is NOT Joe or Beau Biden. We’re not talking about the Tiger Woods of candidates here.

Remember the GOP has a 2 to 1 advantage over the Dems in enthusiasm.

“When you think about it, Pyrrhic victories are dumb.....”

And, when you really think about it, they’re not dumb at all.

If Delaware is going to have two left-leaning Senators.....they might as well be Democrats. What’s the use in having any more “moderate” (i.e., liberal sympathizer) GOP’ers? We don’t have enough Snowes or Collins already? There weren’t enough GOP votes for Cap-n-Trade or Amnesty? Really? Good God......

We’re talking principles and accountability here, folks.......not the letter next to the name and what committee assignments they might get or what pork they can amass. E-effin’-nough....

Sometimes you just got to do what is right. The people of Delaware will now have a real choice. Freedom or slavery.

I would rather lose an election then to have some one in office who will almost always vote against what I believe in and then for kicks since he has an R after his name be able to tar me with the results of his actions. If we lose let the Dem's have the office, and all of the blame when the nation goes up in flames. Don't try to get a share in a disaster.

He is part of the “establishment” now.

Rove and the State GOP beak the stew out of her and she still won.

She may win, she may not win, but on September 14, 2010
She Kicked Mike Castle’s A$$.

Sounds to me like “everybody” suddenly got the democrat talking points from the faux fax machine.

Hint: Look tomorrow for the “leans democrat” to be repeated by EVERY talking head with a microphone!

Which also means that they demo’s have written off 7-9 Senate seats already - and are so desperate that the only “good news” the networks can find is ONE race where an under-funded candidate needs to overcome her state GOP party boss to come from behind. Again.

Dems had a Dem in Castle....we got rid of a liar who claimed to be an R.

When any Senator who votes with commie libs falls, it is a victory.

So all the histrionic squealing from the RINOs over moving from “leans Rep” to “leans Dem”?
Gee, I would have expected it to be rated “safe Dem” now, after all that!
It’s just not living up to the hype.

There is a tidal wave building, and this Republican tide will lift all votes.
O’Donnell can and will win.
It’s all about turning out our people.
And they are fired up and motivated like never before!

Or a pollster trying to drive a meme? Nah, that would be unethical...

Sadly, it's not considered unethical among pollsters in general. I disagree, but most professionals in the field see their job as framing the data to meet the needs of their sponsor rather than as presenting the truth. Still, you're right; the perspective of professionals who are wrong does not change the truth that much of what the professional polling community does is unethical.

The other important truth in this situation is that we have no meaningful data on which to base any prediction. Give the public 48 hours to digest the news, including Christine O'Donnell's post-victory reaction, speeches, and the biased media comments, then give us three days for a thorough poll, and we'll have data. Until then, all we have is speculation on exceptionally fluid pre-primary opinions that have not been thought through by the surveyed voters. These mean about as much as the opinions Ford used in designing the survey-driven Edsel.

I rather run with a strong conservative candidate and lose instead of putting another RINO winding up making the Republican Senate look the same as Democrat. I hope she will put up a best fight and prevail in the end. Semper Fi Mac!

That is a real difference, but the difference between Castle and O'Donnell is also real. I said before the election that we should all support the winner, whether it was Castle or O'Donnell, since control of the Senate agenda is a big deal. I stand by that analysis, whether you are thrilled with Christine or disappointed. As for her chances of victory, those depend on us as voters and as campaign workers, and no one has a clue on those odds until we decide whether to sit on the sidelines and pout or get into the arena and fight. I was working in DE yesterday, and I'll be back every week for the next two months. I choose to fight for the GOP regardless of the mixed reaction to Christine's win; the alternative is two more years of the Obama agenda.
