OLLALA, WA) -- The Kitsap County Sheriff’s office is investigating an incident Saturday night where an off-duty Washing State Patrol trooper shot and killed a man he said was an intruder on his property.

The trooper reportedly caught the man prowling on his property just before midnight Saturday after his dogs began to bark.

Then trooper, armed with a gun, went to investigate and saw a vehicle he did not recognize and then found a man walking on his property near his house, located on Southeast Nelson Road near Olalla.

The trooper says he identified himself as law enforcement officer and the 30-year old man then swung a steel rod and hit the trooper in the head knocking the trooper to the ground.

The trooper was able to get back on his feet and issued verbal commands for the man to drop the steel bar but he reportedly refused so the trooper used lethal force in self-defense.

The intruder, who received medic treatment at the scene, was later pronounced dead at Tacoma General Hospital.

The trooper was treated at St. Anthony's Hospital in Gig Harbor for head and arm injuries sustained when he was hit with the steel bar.

Oops, predator chose poorly. Extra points for saving the people of the state the expense of a trial and ensuring 100% against near certain recidivism...
Since he is in the people’s republic of Washington, I pray that they don’t try to destroy the trooper’s life and that he has a speedy recovery. Head injuries are never trifling.

I can’t see how the property owner being a state trooper during the day is relevant.

I saw the news report. This intruder had to go through, over or around a gate clearly marked “private property no trespassing”. And it appears the Troopers car was parked outside his house, making it clear to the most idiotic moron that it's not a good idea to come snooping around. That being said, officers are on constant watch for people out for revenge against them. I know a Peirce County WA officer who says he never takes the same route home each night.

In this case the property owner was also a LEO -- with arrest powers and responsibility -- and he identified himself as such. What's the problem?

As an armed citizen landowner, I would probably have challenged the invader, too -- but from a defensive position.

It’s too bad the Officer was actually hit. I’m surprised he got that close.

“...an off-duty Washing State Patrol trooper...”

Another example of why Spell Check is a fickle friend at best.

Normally that would be me, but I think he was absolutely justified. Here in AZ ALL CITIZENS have the guarantee of using deadly force in a case like this, do Regular Citizens in Washington have this same right?? or would they be arrested?? I know in CA a private citizen would be in JAIL for doing this.

I think it is because it sounds like he acted more like a cop than a citizen here. A citizen *probably* would not/should not go have dialogue and confrontation like he did.

If I have an intruder in the yard I don't see myself going out and having a conversation or ordering him to drop a weapon. That's what cops say/do.

I don't think there's anything wrong with what he did, under the circumstances. It's just not what most people would do.

See? Even at home, cops are evil.
