George Stephanopoulos: Should Threat of Koran Burning Make Us Rethink First Amendment?

ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Tuesday wondered if a Florida pastor's threat to burn a Koran could "change" and "challenge" the meaning of the First Amendment.

Talking to Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, the Good Morning America host speculated, "When you think about the internet and when you think about the possibility that, you know, a pastor in Florida with a flock of 30, can threaten to burn the Koran and that leads to riots and killings in Afghanistan, does that pose a challenge to the First Amendment, to how you interpret it?"

Stephanopoulos followed-up, "Does [the threat of the Koran burning] change the nature of what we can allow and protect?"

Did Georgie ask the same question in the context of the Bible, the Flag or, a crucifix placed in a jar of urine?

I think not

I’ve been opposed to burning the koran but these idiots are going to have me burning it on 1st amendment issues alone.

Keep it up liberals.

George is a knucklehead. He tries to sound nuanced, but he is just a statist boot licker like the rest of his ilk.

Fully concur. What a moron. It’s OK to put a crusifix in a jar or urine, burn and stomp on the flag, but OMG don’t touch the Koran. Spinless whimps.

Yup. We should change/do away with the 1st Amendment because some nut-burgers in Afghanistan go on a rampage. Typical lib-logic.

No, Georgie. The problem is with the Koran and its people, NOT OUR First Amendment.

Doubt if our Founding Fathers ever thought, or intended, for the religion of Islam to take such a hold in the U.S. Islam is a danger to our country and should always have been treated as such. Radicals, which seem to be the ones in charge, want the U.S. under Sharia law.

Those in the MSM and the politicians without spines should admit such.

There was next to no violence resulting from the Koran burnings. Where’s the problem, Steffie?

Liberals threatening speech that they do not agree with instead of defending their very right to be provocative.

I think all the Liberals have gone looney.... Where is that anti-war crowd to protest the Democrat Nobel Peace Prize winning warmonger in the White House? I mean Obama is inflaming tensions in the Muslim world by sending 30k more troops to the meat grinder of tora bora.... but mark my words the Minute there is a Republican in the White House the streets will be lined with the rabid anti-war protesters burning effigys of the President and threatening violence in the name of PEACE...

All credibility of the anti-war movement should be gone but the media doesn’t even pay attention.

"George Stephanopoulos: Should Threat of Koran Burning Make Us Rethink First Amendment?"

Why, yes George, we should; but we'll start with "journalists" like yourself first.

I have a follow up question for Georgie:

Should islam make us rethink the First Amendment?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

So the specific question is: 'Does islam qualify as a religion'? If said religion instructs its followers to convert by the sword - allowing those that refuse to convert to islam (that would be you and I) the options to be a slave or to die -- why should said religion be granted First Amendment protection?
It is a pact to destroy a Nation.

The 1st Amendment serves many purposes, but one that many have not taken into account: this particular amendment serves as a pressure relief valve. If we can vent our frustrations with words, we are less likely to vent through revolution.

If you want another revolution, Georgie, screw around with the 1st amendment. Koran burning will be the least of the problems.
