Fear of Schumer in Reid-Angle race is a cop-out
Gun Rights Examiner ^ | September 14, 2010 | David Codrea

Posted on 09/14/2010 9:51:35 AM PDT by Neil E. Wright

Why won't NRA endorse (formerly) A-rated Sharron Angle against (formerly) B-rated Harry Reid in Nevada's 2010 United States Senate race? If they have any expectation of maintaining credibility in other races, why would the association negate confidence in their own incentive system?

The only argument, excuse really, parrots an NRA talking point, whether those uttering it realize the apologist-exploited meme's origins:

I’ll give you four words: Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

That's Chris Cox, the NRA-ILA Executive Director and chair of the Political Victory Fund, explaining why they won't be trying for...uh...victory in Nevada's U.S. Senate race. The assumption is, Harry Reid, all by his own self, will keep "bad" bills from coming to the Senate floor that Schumer would gleefully expedite.

....snip....

As we've also seen, Reid's incentive to continue in the role of NRA safety valve has been all but eviscerated by the Association declining to reward his role in that capacity with an endorsement--not that they wouldn't like to, but they know their members would revolt. So who is now giving Reid a stronger inducement to play ball? NRA or Michael Bloomberg, set on taking his act to the national stage and rewarding those who pass his "litmus test"?

Those like Harry Reid, a guy who has spent his entire political career catering to his patrons, and who, at over 70, is probably not all that concerned about reelection in six years anyway. That means he no longer needs to worry about losing votes next time out. That means he can do whatever he and his New York sponsor want.

Do you think Reid would allow a Bloomberg fundraiser to happen if he wasn't telegraphing intentions to the party faithful that it's time to drop pretenses and pandering, and get down to the serious business of power?

I received an NRA-ILA e-mail about a month ago that said they were not endorsing Harry Reid this year.

It’s simple.

One cannot trust ANY democrat when it comes to gun rights.

One cannot trust ANY democrat to be rough on crime and criminals.

One cannot trust ANY democrat when it comes to supporting individual states rights vs the power of the federal government.

One cannot trust ANY democrat to lower taxes.

One cannot trust ANY democrat to support individual property rights.

I have enough dirt in the book I wrote on Harry to make anyone who supports him (even backhandedly like the NRA) subject to a backlash if he gets reelected.

But if Reid is defeated in Nevada, that would tend to indicate national conditions that might just win 10 Republican seats on Nov 2.

Yeah, it's still a long shot, but if they gain 9, they could sure make a rational argument for power sharing. After all, the Dims demanded it After Jumpin' Jeff Jeffords migrated to his home country.

With only 50 seats plus 5 to 7 RINOs, neither Schumer nor Durbin would be able to overcome a Republican filibuster.

No need to panic at this point in time, IMO.

If reid loses that will make 2 rat majority leaders in a row who got kicked out of office. If we can do the same to plugs schumer it might be worth it.

Or it might have been Jeff's brother Jim.

Sheesh, I can't exactly blame that on a typo.

Winning 10 seats is a long shot. Wish for this if you must
must don’t expect the miricle to happen.

Far more likely is Speaker Schumer instead of Speaker Reid.
To me and other 2A fanatics this is anathema. Better hope that Reid wins if GOP doesn’t sweep all the open Senate seats, because Schumer and Feinstein will bring up the AWB again maybe even in the lameduck session.

It would be nice if republicans and conservatives could get the ten seats they need in the Senate but I am not expecting that although I wish it.

I will be happy if they even get five or six solid seats definitely.

Winning 10 seats is a long shot.

I'm pretty sure I said that. You might double-check to be sure.

If Angle beats Reid, Schumer will be minority leader.

If the House is in our control, which is likely, it would not matter what the Majority leader in the Senate brings to the floor.

NRA is not endorsing Reid—howeveer, they have not come out in support of Angle.

Gun Owners of America have come out in support of Angle- yesterday or this AM.

"NRA is not endorsing Reid—howeveer, they have not come out in support of Angle."

I don't think they have come out with a list of anyone they support yet. As I recall they usually do that in late September/early October. It was a pretty unusual step for them to come out and individually name Reid as someone they would not support this election cycle and it's probably because they have gotten heat from members like myself. Look at it this way, name another candidate running for office they have specifically come out and said they would not support this election cycle.
