A Republican rout in November would usher in a class of Senate freshmen who ran on pledges of no amnesty for illegal immigrants a changing of the guard that could doom President Barack Obamas already faint chances of passing a comprehensive immigration reform bill in his first term.
Immigration reform advocates could see turnover in 17 seats held by Democrats and Republicans who, at one point, voted for a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, according to a POLITICO analysis of the Senate campaign field. In all cases, the Republicans running for those seats have vowed to never support a legalization program or at least not consider it until the border has been certified secure.
This means the Democratic vision of immigration reform, which couples tough border enforcement and a crackdown on employers with plans to legalize 11 million undocumented immigrants, would need to shift much further to the right to stand any chance in a closely divided Senate.
The prospects for victory of comprehensive immigration reform are slim, said Frank Sharry, executive director of Americas Voice, an immigrant advocacy group.
If predictions for a broad Democratic defeat in the midterm elections prove accurate, immigration advocates could start out in January with as few as 30 senators on their side. A total of 73 senators backed a key test vote on immigration reform in 2006, but that coalition shrank to 46 when a similar bill came up in 2007. The Senate is the battleground on immigration because a bill would originate there, where 60 votes are needed to pass anything controversial.

We can only hope...
I DO NOT WANT illegals to gain any amnesty; I want them arrested and deported! I want them f@cking gone from my country, period!
We should be manning our borders as if Al Queda is trying to enter it. The result is the same.
“...immigration advocates could start out in January with as few as 30 senators on their side.”
Good. I am tired of being taxed to death. Obama is running his stealth amnesty by the way. Hopefully Congress will push deportation by attrition where they cut off benefits and push illegals out.
Palin’s friend McCain will be fighting for amnesty.
Isn’t part of the reason Murkowski and Utah’s Bennett had to go, thier Amnesty votes? And yet the amnesty king himself survived.
and cap and trade...
and card check...
look what these pigs have already done against popular will;
nothing is beyond possibility to those knowingly engaged in a suicide mission.
It's also the Bush GOP vision of reform. However, reform isn't necessary for enforcement, which only leaves us with the vision of amnesty.
“with plans to legalize 11 million undocumented immigrants”
Read as, “With plans to ensure a democratic majority forever with an influx of illegals who can now vote.”
Can we all have a collective “Aaaawwwwwwwwwww”
What a shame. John McCain is weeping (alone of course, so as not to destroy his new conservative image)
Only to legalize 11 million? What are they going to do with the other 19+ million of them?
“The prospects for victory of comprehensive immigration reform are slim, said Frank Sharry, executive director of Americas Voice, an immigrant advocacy group.”
O, be still my beating heart.
I was gonna post a reply but you beat me to it. Agree w/ you 100%.
Illegals OUT!
Bump
Hey Frank, I'm an immigrant advocator too. Legal immigration. Legal immigrants.
Ping!
More Americans are abducted on the border of Mexico than in Iraq!
Finish building the fence.
It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their visas or Invade.
I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.
