Professors for Hijab-non-Muslim women might like to wear headscarves in solidarity
Frontpagemagazine ^ | Sep 14th, 2010 | Phyllis Chesler

So many educated people are afflicted by the equivalent of a blank stare where genuine thought should exist. It’s as if they’re sleepwalkers, oblivious to reality, or under plexiglass, where they can’t hear anything with which they don’t already agree.

Here’s a case in point. A woman who identifies herself as a professor at a Chicago university (it’s Northeastern Illinois) publishes this touching note in the New York (Muslim) Times today. Gail Dreyfuss describes an “encounter” she had with a student who was wearing both hijab (a headscarf) and a pin which read “I am a Muslim.” I guess the student did not want anyone mistaking her for … a Buddhist or a Jew; perhaps the student did not think that westerners know that a wearing a tight “headscarf which framed her face” meant she was a Muslim.

Dreyfuss, a professor of Linguistics, asked her student if she had a “spare pin.” The student took off her own. The professor “wore it all day and received only positive reactions from students and staff members.”

And that’s when she came up with her Great Idea. Dreyfuss writes: “It occurred to me that non-Muslim women might like to wear headscarves in solidarity with our Muslim sisters.… This might be one way to show them that we’re all in this together.”

Is Dreyfuss serious? Does she believe that Muslims are under the kind of siege that Jews were under during the Nazi regime and which prompted Danes to all wear the yellow star as a way of hiding endangered Danish Jews from Jew-hunters?

Clearly, she does.

Dreyfuss has drunk the kool-aid and believes that “Islamophobia” really exists in America. This is not surprising since, for a long time now, but more and more intensely, the mainstream media has launched an all-out campaign to persuade people of this.

Well, Dreyfuss is a professor, she can read. I suggest she visit the FBI’s site dedicated to hate crimes in America. There she will find that of the 1,732 victims of religious hate crimes in 2008 in America, 66.1 percent were targeted because of anti-Jewish bias and 7.5% were targeted because of anti-Islamic bias.

Professor Dreyfuss: May I suggest that you start wearing a Jewish star to express solidarity with the most hated, most vilified, most unjustly demonized of all Americans: The Jews? Or, if you will, why not wear a kipah (skullcap, yarmulke)? Better yet, why not wear a Hasidic wig, covered by a scarf, and a sign saying “I am a Jew.”

I am sorry, I do not want to sound mean or bitter when I am actually disheartened, alarmed, by such liberal western support for clothing which is a visual symbol of women’s subordination—to men, not to God; which is not a religious requirement; which so many feminists in the Islamic world have opposed; which so many contemporary Arab and Muslim states have also opposed in its more extreme form (the niqab, the burqa) for security reasons.

When I see women in the West wearing hijab today, I understand it is also a very political statement, sometimes a jihadic statement, a misguided return to seventh century “roots,” and sometimes, a response to what the Muslim girl or woman has been told about Western “Islamophobia.”

Sure, by now, even easygoing, ordinary Americans are waking up to the fact that 9/11 was a terrorist act perpetrated by Muslims, as were the shootings at Fort Hood, the Christmas Day attempted “underwear” bomber, and the failed Times Square bomber. Clearly, the professoriate refuses to accept these facts.

“Well, Dreyfuss is a professor, she can read.” That is a questionable assumption.

Moslem women are the problem. A real woman can put any man in his place...and keep him there...and make him like it...even make him think it’s his idea.

Perhaps, in solidarity with Muslims, the female professor should resign and the female student should quit school and go back to their husband’s or father’s houses and not leave unless accompanied by a man, and then only in a burqua.

So university women have gone from burning their bras to coverying the faces?

This woman’s at the wrong school. She’s not just stupid, she’d Harvard stupid.

....good article from my hero David Horowitz’s magazine...maybe people like this professor think that their ‘tolerance’ will save them from Sharia...maybe they think that Muslims will go easy on them...they won’t...given the chance, Muslims will wring their necks like chickens.

There are real professors (physics, math, chemistry, engineering, etc), and there are joke professors (any “studies” types, sociology, political “science”).

This woman is most definitely one of the second type.

"...maybe people like this professor think that their ‘tolerance’ will save them from Sharia..."

Possibly, but I don't think people like her think that far ahead. I think it's simply the fact that American leftists validate themselves by collaborating with this countrys enemies.

I like the idea of those women so identifying themselves. It is like guys with their caps on backward. One knows on sight and from a distance not to bother engaging them in conversation. They do not have anything useful to say and probably don’t know very many words non scatological words, anyway.

Here’s an idea - Muslim women should eschew the hijab in solidarity with the civilized world.

LMAO. It is largely true, but my son-in-law is a Harvard Law Grad, and is a strong Republican. We often talk about politics and I recently asked him if I he had met me on the political spectrum. He said he was moving that way, but every time he looked I was further "out there". hee hee hee!

I have a better idea.

Muslim women should take THEIRS OFF in “solidarity” with the mass of free women in the world.

WHEN are we going to STOP tolerating these MANIACS????

Burn a Koran and mail the ashes to them, in “solidarity” of course.

Maybe she should receive 99 lashes and get her nose and ears cropped in “solidarity” with her Muslim “sisters”. She might even consider volunteering to be stoned (if she wasn’t ALREADY when she came up with this idea.

What are western liberals so damn stupid???

Some ethnic clothes like headscarves can be pretty, but the assumptions that come with them aren’t worth the trouble.

(Although I have known women who worked dusty jobs who wore headscarves for practical reasons. They were always being mistaken for muslims, but they thought it was worth it not to have so much grit in their hair)
