For Memory-Impaired Democrats: Bush slams Democrats' spending habits, threatens vetoes.

June 16, 2007

President Bush condemned Democrats for excessive spending during his weekly radio address this morning, vowing to veto any bill he deems fiscally irresponsible. The harsh remarks come a day after Congress passed a $37 billion Homeland Security budget bill, roughly $2.1 billion more than what the President requested. House Republicans rallied 147 votes against the bill, enough to uphold a potential presidential veto.

"The American people do not want to return to the days of tax and spend policies," Bush said. "They expect accountability and fiscal discipline in Washington, D.C. And I will use my veto to stop tax increases and runaway spending that threaten the strength of our economy and the prosperity of our people."

The President has advocated less government spending this year in efforts to reduce the Federal deficit. But since taking over the House and the Senate, Democrats have passed a number of measures to support programs it deemed under-funded during Republican control.

There was a Freeper the other day who wrote the following words and said anyone who wanted could use them and requested everybody pass them along in some form or another... I tried to find his post but I couldn't...

original quote: "Obama and democrats talk about the "Bush recession" that started in the fall of 2008, two years after Democrats took over Congress.

The average person thinks Republicans were "in charge" until Obama took office, despite the fact that budgets and spending are completely under the control of Congress.

Democrats know this and use phrases like "the Bush recession" to deflect blame from themselves for the nation’s economic problems."

Alot of people commented on his post. I thought it was excellent and I have used it in a little visual - if you want, you can use it and pass it on, also:

http://buddysblog.typepad.com/blog/2010/09/23-words-a-key-to-crushing-democrats-.html

(I am not promoting my blog - I don't advertise or put it on search - it is a little private teaching blog for a group I mentor - but I am doing every little thing I can from today until Nov)

Please, whatever way you can, pass his excellent concept along - often and everywhere. We have to change the template, they've gotten away with this stuff too long..

Words are cheap.

How many vetoes did GWB perform against the GOP led congress?

1, 2, 0?

He never really cut the size of government, he grew it.

Don’t try and re-write history.

I wasn’t talking about Bush or trying to rewrite history - he’s not running for anything; my point was the dems are forever talking about the horrible mess they inherited from the republicans - and there were 147 repub votes that could have upheld a veto... that is the template I was talking about...

People like you gave us Obama and a democratic congress. How’s that working for you? Don’t see any difference in Bush spending after 9/11 and cost of 2 wars versus what is going on now?

I don’t think Bush was perfect, but I’ll take him anyday over what we have now. Get rid of the republicans that don’t get how angry we are about the spending spree that has gone on for many years in Congress, but I am sick SICK of Bush bashing. I am also sick of “there is no difference in the 2 parties”. If that’s true, then why are all the conservatives winning in the primaries from the Republican party?

There’s a difference in the 2 parties and Bush isn’t the dang bogeyman for every ill in this nation. And congratulations, I’ve been with FR for many years and I don’t ever write posts like this, but your flippant comment just didn’t sit right with me.

Of course that isn’t what you were talking about...unfortunately, there are those who like to “refute” what you are saying by responding to arguments that you had never made, making it impossible to have a discussion.

Just try to explain that to an 0bamabot. I swear they are as dumb as rocks! Have no idea how government works, who does what, etc. Thank you publik edumakation. I have even had to PROVE to a school teacher that the POTUS doesn't control spending.

I just wish a “journalist” would point it out sometime when reporting on Obama’s weekly “what I inherited” campaign speech.

That’s the point. The media will never do it so we have to... if you can get the truth in front of people they are most often receptive and then want more... we have to do this.

The reason the average person thinks Republicans were in charge until Obama was in office is Bush’s failure to fight as a leader. It seemed as though after Katrina he went into hiding. The Democrats smelled blood and went on the offensive. Bush took the punches and rarely stood up to defend himself. Had he gone aggressively on the offensive against wasteful spending, using the veto effectively, history might have been very different. In politics he committed the sin of allowing the other side to set the agenda and frame the story.

Bush complaining occasionally about Democratic spending in his last two years was extremely hypocritical. He inherited a balanced budget from Clinton and the Republican Congress which he proceeded to quickly squander. He and the Republican Congress went on a wild spending spree on domestic programs while engaging in two unfunded wars.

One of the unfortunate legacies of the last 50 years has been the government engaging in unfunded wars. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan plus the maintenance of large ground forces in Europe during the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s. In hindsight, had we not pursued an imperialist foreign policy, or had pursued that policy by fully funding it with tax money, we would not be in the current fiscal mess.
