Dems plan for a future without Pelosi

For House Democrats, planning for a future without Speaker Nancy Pelosi is neither pleasant nor easy.

But as poll results worsen and a Republican-controlled House looks more and more likely, Democrats are beginning to realize they face a top-to-bottom leadership shake-up if the powerful speaker steps aside in a Democratic minority.

For the most part, Democrats have no obvious road map, no heir apparent to the Pelosi mantle and a fairly thin bench around which to plan the future of their party. After the election, Democrats would face a power vacuum in the lower ranks — assuming current House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer takes the helm as minority leader in a post-Pelosi Democratic Caucus.

“This is a subject that everybody in town is thinking about,” said a former House Democrat who keeps close contact with his former colleagues.

Pelosi has privately discouraged any talk of a Democratic minority — despite multiple predictions that as many as 80 Democratic seats are in play.

The most likely scenario after a Republican takeover would be for Pelosi to step down, with Hoyer replacing her. But the idea of a clean sweep of Democratic leadership — forcing out all the elected leaders — is clearly being considered by the rank and file.

“If we lose it badly, Pelosi would have to leave, as might the whole leadership team,” said a veteran House Democrat, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “I can see Hoyer becoming minority leader. And I can imagine that Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) would stay as whip, but then retire. They could become transitional leaders as we look for new leadership. It would have to sort itself out.”

Like everything else, it’s always a good thing when House Democrats are getting things that are neither pleasent nor easy.

Since I believe this will be a Democratic Holocaust, I will hope that the Dems turn HARD to the LEFT and become a shrill and irate minority, never able to fool the public with claims of moderation again.

You and I share the same fear. Let us work hard NOW to ensure our fear is unfounded.

She's not stepping aside, no matter what happens, way too arrogant.

assuming current House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer takes the helm as minority leader in a post-Pelosi Democratic Caucus.

Wow, this would be amusing.

Oh, please. Like there isn't a massive amount of hatred for her among the dems, especially after the way she bullied, threatened, bribed and lied to get her 217 votes on Obamacare. Those who voted for it deserve their fate. Not only for making the wrong vote, but for caving in to that botoxed old tyrant. They were sent to represent their constituents, not please Broom Hilda.

-------------------------------------

I agree with that

Dems have had the keys to government since 2007, and Bush was a backseat driver. Spending originates in the House of Representatives. Zer0, Nancy, and Harry drove the car off a cliff in 2008, and now you expect to blame Bush and escape with no political harm with the help of your piss-stream media. Guess what, you bastards, the American voters are coming for you this time. Go ahead, keep blaming Bush, for soon one-third of you will be gone. You're futures in office are all used up.

Throw 'em all out.

I was just hoping that the American people in a fit of utter disgust would repudiate the Congress so badly that even Nancy Pelosi would fail to receive the votes in San Francisco necessary to retain her House seat. The opposition most unfortunately comprises a loathsome bunch of deeply corrupt legislators without regard for the welfare of the American people nor even for the maintenance of a republic conceived in liberty. But they’re far better than the current crowd.

I would suspect a secret ballot on this issue sent around to all of her colleagues would show a marked disagreement with this opinion.

I dream of the new majority leader grabbing the gavel from Pelosi, sending her down to the gallery, and screaming into the mike, "the era of socialist tyranny is OVER!"

Sadly, John Boehner will say a lot of nice things about Nancy Pelosi and our system and very little will change.
