Former Republican governor Arne Carlson, today (Monday, Sept. 13) endorsed Independence Party gubernatorial candidate Tom Horner, for governor.
This is not about Tom Horner its about us, said Carlson, speaking on the State Capitol about Minnesota voters. His (Horners) election is in our best interest, said Carlson. . . . Still a Republican, says Carlson
Oh course Im a Republican, said Carlson, who has long distanced himself from the party, when a reporter asked about his party status.

Carlson has been a powerful force in the MN GOP for years. Wanna bet the he continues to be a big shot even after this stunt?
I just can't WAIT until I get the next phone call from this party asking for money.
He would.....
Emmer was a bad selection,though.
He’s the party’s candidate. Liberals need to suck it up and live with it.
You are right of course. There is two groups...the Monica Lewinsky Republicans and then there is the normal conservatives....
These “moderates” look for excuses to break away. Carlson says today’s Republicans care more about the bedroom than the boardroom. Oh really?? How much as abortion, marriage, or other social issues dominated this campaign? Not much, seems to me. Increasing government and decreasing employment have trumped everything.
Get used to this phrase “Governor Dayton” :/

“Carlson has been a powerful force in the MN GOP for years. Wanna bet that he continues to be a big shot even after this stunt?”
Trust me, Arne Carlson does not have much clout in the GOP. back when he was Governor, he had, at best, lukewarm relations with them.
If the state GOP calls, don’t turn ‘em down. More than likely, they’ll be asking for donations for Victory 2010, the party’s big GOTV drive. And with the kind of money that Dayton’s family and the labor unions are putting into this race, we’ll need every cent!
How so?
{MinnPost article] Its not surprising because Carlson, in recent years, has expressed an intense dislike of Gov. Tim Pawlentys style and policies. He also has bristled at the ever-rightward philosophical direction his party has taken.
Carlson always was at odds with the social conservatives in his own party, never winning their support.
I'd like one of these "bedroom" folks to show me where modern conservatives ever tried to stop them from doing any flippin' thing they please in their bedroom. Although I will admit I occasionally wonder just what the ones who yell about this the most are really doing in there. :-))
He was always at odds with the FISCAL conservatives too.
Oscar Carlson is more of a Republican than Arne is.
Yep, again the Independence Party screws it up by going moderate. No thanks to the Ross Perot effect. Go Emmer!
I read a recent guest editorial in a recent Star and Sickle. A college professor, describes himself as a Hubert Humphrey Democrat, says he is voting for Emmer. He called the modern Dems for having lost touch, and relying on the old “throw money at the problem” which just is not working. Sort of described Emmer as “the adult in the room”. I have also heard some liberals describing Dayton as “scary” - as in crazy scary.
Same prof also said that there would be no place for old Hubert in today’s Democratic Party. I find such comments cause for optimism. People are waking up, even in Minnesota. Now I hope the Dem organization does something stupid like what they did at the Wellstone Funerally.
When guys like Colin Powell and Arne Duncan continue to call themselves "Republican" despite never supporting the GOP on anything, someone needs to confront them and ask why the heck they consider themselves "Republican". In Powell's case, it was probably solely on the basis he kept getting promoted up the ranks during GOP administrations.
Former Illinois Governor Jim Thompson is another guy who's gotten even worse than he was during his RINO heyday. This guy's become everything he campaigned against. In the 1970s he won the Governor's office because he locked up Chicago crooks. Now he spends his time defending them tooth-and-nail.
How so?

Too conservative for Minnesota- especially this time since Democrats haven’t won it for 20-25 years.
Plus his personal weaknesses don’t help either.
