What's at Stake in Delaware
Redstate.org ^ | Sept 13, '10 | Dan McLaughlin

Tomorrow, the voters in seven states and the District of Columbia go to the polls to conclude the primary election season. The most closely-watched race on the ballot will be the race between long-time at-large liberal Republican Congressman Mike Castle and Tea Party-backed conservative insurgent Christine O’Donnell for the Republican nomination for the open Senate seat previously vacated by Joe Biden.

...

The Castle-O’Donnell race has become perhaps the most divisive primary of this cycle within the conservative movement, for reasons I’ll explain in a moment. There are a couple of important questions at stake that are worth considering, which really go to the heart of what kind of party the GOP should be; but it’s equally important to recall that we are compelled to face those questions only because of the particular weaknesses of these two candidates and the conditions in Delaware. The result is that there are good arguments on both sides of this one, arguments that have been made eloquently already on the RS front page by people on both sides. As I’ll explain, I come out on the side of backing Castle, but the case for backing O’Donnell can’t be dismissed out of hand and deserves serious reflection.

If that is the case then let's keep Harry Reid(assuming he wins his race). Republicans have historically done better things for the country when in the minority than when in the majority except when that minority status is overwhelming as right now. The exception is a relatively short window after November 1994 and much of that success comes from the Republicans going in with a coherent compact program. That is not the case this year.

But you see J.S., we followed your “wiseness” several years ago and elected a majority in the house and senate...filled with a “Rainbow Coalition” of Republicans.

And what did conservatives get in return for that? a MINORITY.
And Obama.

Are you not aware that Scott Brown (GOP) won Teddy Kennedy’s seat in MA? Something NO ONE would have predicted.

So, it happened in MA, it can happen in any state...even Delaware. Things have changed.

Do you not know that, citizens, who elect Tea Party candidates across the nation know what is at stake?

They do, I do and I say let the chips fall where they may.

But surely you should be sad that Brown won Massachusetts. We would have been better off nominating a true conservative and having Coakley elected.

I say the same thing tenmountain,

BTW: In case you haven’t noticed Scott Brown isn’t a conservative!

I am just asking Conservatives be wise, in whichever candidate they pick, and not go with emotion! PLEASE. Let us continue to reason and hope that whoever wins in Tueday’s primary can and WILL beat Coons, If O’Donnelly wins, and beats Coons GREAT a new Conservative to add to our ranks, if she loses then it may (or may not) have been foolish to pick her Tom.

If Castle wins: At least he CAN win and will be better than Coons, as well as give Conservatives power in the Seat of Government.

(At least he’s margianlly 1 more vote for use on some issues, Coons would be on almost 0.000000000001% none)!

So all I am saying is being wise is right, not advocating a “wiseness”..see

I don't agree. It's best to remove Castle from Congress.

We do not want to enlarge the gang of Senate RINOs that undermine conservative issues and who support the Dems. The taking of the House this session will stymie the rat agenda and the Senate can be taken back in 2012, which is secondary to the House take over for now; although, taking the Senate may likely happen without this DE Senate seat.

And I don't buy the RINO BS that voting for O'Donnell is a sure fire win for the rats in the general election.

Voting for RINOs in primaries is not an option.

Ruling Class absolutely applies in Delaware. That bunch is as incestuous as any bunch of banjo pickers you ever heard of. Example:

Michael Castle

"..In 1992, when Castle retired as Governor due to constitutional term limits. The result was what became known as "the Swap." Castle ran for the seat of U.S. Representative Thomas R. Carper and Carper ran for Governor. Delaware’s political leadership had quietly worked out the arrangement and retained the services of two very popular office holders...."

“If Castle wins: At least he CAN win and will be better than Coons, as well as give Conservatives power in the Seat of Government.”

We have been following that advice for decades and it’s not working.

BTW, Scott Brown is a lot closer to being conservative, than Castle will ever be. Castle’s votes is proof of that.

> “The only way Castle is a “wise” choice is that he is more electable if the conventional wisdom holds and therefore adds toward a GOP majority.”

.
Which is nonsense on its face!

The voters are disgusted with the compromisers, and they are not very ‘electable.’

Any time that you can beat an incumbant in the primary, it is guaranteed to be a good thing.

Scott Brown is a lot closer to conservative than any elected GOP in the east. He’s certainly not a RINO.

Mike Castle voted to investigate George W Bush for impeachment for “lying” about Iraq.

I did not know that. I will be happy to see this POS go, & will donate to O'Donnell for the general.

Show me proof that O’Donnell is a possible win in DE??

I know, and agree with your arguements, but DE isn’t OK, it isn’t UT, it isn’t even NH, it’s a very liberals state with much of the Republican party (even the rank-and-file) RINOesque, I spent a bit of 2006 election cycle campaigning there.

Come on you take what you can get, beside if O’Donnell wins, I just hope she can win in Nov. (is she more ideologically with me: Yes), I just know that she will take much more $$$$ for that win.

Castle's Congressional Votes
2008 Bailout$ Auto$ 2009 Cap&Trade FDA/Food Healthcare
Representative HR1424 District HR7321 District Representative HR2454 District HR2749 District HR3962 District
Castle, Michael [R] Yea DE-0 Aye DE-0 Castle, Michael [R] Aye DE-0 Yea DE-0 No DE-0

Actions have consequences. All Congressmen who voted for Cap & Trade are either TRATITORS or simply too stupid to hold public office. All MUST be Removed. NO Exceptions.

I don’t remember much of a primary battle in MA.

The argument at the time was not Brown or Conservative, the argument was Brown or Liberal.

Since there was nothing proven about Browns liberalism and he did promise to vote against Obamacare, and kept his promise, people did vote for him.

Castle isn’t promising Conservatives anything. He’s a known RINO, left of Collins, right of Snowe.

Christine could easily win in November. People all across the country are pissed at Democrats. In 2008, they were pissed at Republicans.

NO
MORE
RINOS

Please logically (and not just wanting her to) win, that she “can” through polls, money, support, etc..?

Not saying she can’t I just want to see “proof”!

I thought we were supposed vote our principles in the primaries, and vote the party in the general election.

That's exactly right, dread. The same folks smearing O'Donnell are the same ones who preached at you about McCain ("the time for choosing was the primaries!!")
