The old joke about Cary is that it's an acronym for Containment Area for Relocated Yankees.
But the migration from the Northeast has hardly been contained to Cary. All across North Carolina, the state has seen explosive growth, especially in the metropolitan, resort and military areas.
The demographic changes are having an important impact on Tar Heel politics, making the state less conservative - no matter what happens this fall, according to a new study.
According to a study by two political science professors, that migration is an important reason why North Carolina voted for Barack Obama for president in 2008 - the first time it went Democratic in a presidential race in 32 years. "In contemporary North Carolina, migrants born outside the South are more likely to identify and register politically unaffiliated, and their growing share of the state's electorate directly contributed to Obama's narrow win," write M.V. Hood III of the University of Georgia and Seth C. McKee of the University of South Florida.

‘Let the Northern Liberal not breed or migrate in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his northern lair, for he is the harbinger of death.’
Obama would lose NC by a landslide if the election were held today.
Parts of NC are overrun by mexicans. Barring a drastic change, it’ll continue.
CARY also = Containment Area for Relocated Yuppies!~
I can only pray it will be a lot longer than 32 years before it does it again!!!
These suburban conservatives have led to Republican dominance in areas around Charlotte and parts of the Triad and Wake County.
Two other major groups of transplants are whites from the northeast intent on recreating their liberal distopia (Chapel Hill/Asheville), and blacks from other Southern states and beyond (Charlotte in particular).
Then there are foreign immigrants, and that picture is very complex when it comes to legal immigrants with voting rights.
Later.
I live in the area...
There are many universities.. UNC Chapel Hill, Duke....
Very high black population in the area
Lot’s of Gov’t jobs as the state capital is nearby
Thus the area tends toi be very liberal... I am an exception in this area, even though it is Bible Belt..
“Parts of NC are overrun by mexicans. Barring a drastic change, itll continue.”
Not over run, but very many.. I went to Walmart the other day and thought I was South of the Border...
A large part of the answer: crazy John McCain with his creepy Cindy.
I live in Eastern NC and just about all of the waterfront property has been bought by NJ and NY’rs. They build entire communities (gated of course) and look down on the locals. They vote for the same crap that they left behind: more spending, higher taxes and more liberal judges.
Remember that Catholics are a Democrat voting block, not a Republican one.
How do we solve this? The only solution I could come up with is requiring a probationary voting period whenever someone moves to a new state ie when you move to a new state there would be an acclimation period before voting would be allowed. Or voting rights would only be granted after a qualification vote by the potential voters neighbors.
I'm surprised to hear that myth.
Electorally, Catholics overall are a swing group. Active Catholics lean Republican. Pro-life Catholics vote reliably Republican, or in the Midwest possibly for socially conservative Democrats (e.g. Dan Lipinski, D-IL). Kennedy-Pelosi Catholics are a Democrat voting bloc.
I woke up this morning in Connecticut and noticed that in my neighborhood, I am surrounded by Yankees. And they are DEMS, too!
I am planning my escape ... maybe another 5 years here. New Hamphshire. Unless i find a better spot before then. Of course, by being here I got plenty of LIB congressman to campaign against.
(Hall NY19, Murphy NY20, CT-4, CT-5, Kennedy-RI ... are are a quick drive from my home.)
The Catholics in Name Only are a Democrat voting block...
Many in this area refer to themselves as Reformed Catholics.... liberal even on life issues!
Many of the newcomers to Cary are best described as “half backs”. They moved to South Florida 20 years ago, and with the increasing cost of insurance, property taxes and overall cost of living, many of them left for the low cost living and decent weather offered by North Carolina. The term comes from the fact that they didn’t move all the way back to New York, only half way back.
bump
There is no myth, Catholics are a Democrat constituency, Obama for instance won 54% of the Catholic vote.
