Barack Obama is to go ahead with plans to sell Saudi Arabia advanced aircraft and other weapons worth up to $60bn (£39bn), the biggest arms deal in US history, in a strategy of shoring up Gulf Arab allies to face any military threat from Iran.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the administration is also in talks with the Saudis about possible naval and missile-defence upgrades that could be worth tens of billions of dollars more over five to 10 years.
Plans to go ahead with the package, which has been under secret negotiation since 2007, have been known for some time and have raised angry objections from Iran and to a lesser extent from Israel, an even closer US ally which is anxious to maintain its strategic edge over any potential adversary in the Middle East.
In its notification to Congress, the administration will authorise the Saudis to buy as many as 84 new F-15 fighters, upgrade 70 more, and purchase three different types of helicopters – 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and 36 Little Birds, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Actually, it’s probably a good thing that we are finally going to get the Saudis to buck up for more of the defense in the Gulf. A large part of Gulf War I was paid for by others. Gulf War II was on the USA dime.
In addition, Obama has approved advanced F-16 fighters for Egypt, plus Harpoon Block 2 anti-ship missiles, Hellfire air-to-ground missiles, and fast attack craft and helicopters. Obama has also approved the sale of $10 billion worth of arms to Kuwait, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Meanwhile, Obama has blocked the delivery to Israel of key weapons components needed to upgrade the Jewish state's defense forces. Among the blocked arms are AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopters, which Obama is selling to Egypt.

We should do this. Money goes for jobs in the arms industries, and the Saudis are too incompetent to use them effectively.
Of course, I suspect that a lot of the money will end up with Obama’s whores at GE, but you have to take the good with the bad...

Because at the time they were less formidably armed and needed to be on the side of power?
