Bloodly R.I. Primary Gives GOP Some Hope of Stealing Another Kennedy Seat
Congressional Quarterly ^ | September 12, 2010 | Steve Peoples

Few predicted that Rhode Island’s 1st district — occupied by the retiring Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D) for 16 years — might be up for grabs this November.

But few predicted a bloodbath in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, either.

Despite calls for civility from the state Democratic Party chairman, political newcomer and local businessman Anthony Gemma has attacked primary opponent Providence Mayor David Cicilline with such ferocity in recent days that Republicans are beginning to see an opportunity.

“The only hope here is a completely bloody primary,” a GOP campaign aide said. “And Gemma has stepped up to the plate to make that happen. This is a scenario that has to play out for this district to be competitive.”

Don’t think it can be that bad? Here’s the partial script from a recent statewide radio spot that highlights the capital city’s high unemployment rates, empty buildings, failing infrastructure and foreclosures:

“What did David Cicilline do? Nothing. In fact, one of the things he did do to make the news was get involved in a coverup of his brother’s felony. David Cicilline was quite possibly the most ineffective mayor in the city’s history. Now he wants to be our Congressman. Are you kidding me?”

This would be a huge pickup. I do think that both DemocRAT candidates are vulnerable in the general election and Republicans have a credible candidate.

I can’t believe these idiots kept voting for Patrick “Put It On My Tab” Kennedy for eight terms.

Who might that be?

I'm not sure. The Republican is running practically unopposed and received endorsements from Giuliani and McCain. Hardly reassuring.

“Who might that be?”

The candidate is John Loughlin, a state Representative from Tiverton.

Agreed. Even without a bloody Dem primary it would be a good takeover opportunity for us (despite the district’s Democrat lean), but with a likely schism in the pro- and anti-Cicilline camps it gives Loughlin an even better shot at victory.

Just when you thought New England was gone to the left to never be retrieved, there are some GOP shots at pick ups. The Scott Brown win showed that people really do vote their pocketbooks and a candidate that pushes hard on that issue has a shot of winning.

We just 5 more races to the Master List at KeyHouseRaces.com and this is not one of them. If you see any polling on this, give a ping. Probably will have to wait until after the primary on that.
