Sarah Palin's Iowa trip points to 2012 presidential run
guardian.co.uk ^ | Sunday September 12, 2010 | Ewen MacAskill

There are boxes that US presidential hopefuls have to tick early. They have to start building a campaign team, albeit discreetly. They have to set up a fundraising machine. And they have to visit Iowa, the small but politically crucial state that traditionally kicks off a White House run.

Sarah Palin has ticked the first two and on Friday will tick the third when she is the main speaker at a $100-a-seat Republican dinner in Des Moines, Iowa. The party's sole superstar has not yet said whether she will seek the nomination to take on Barack Obama in 2012. But all the indications point to a run, and Friday's visit is the biggest sign yet.

Democrats may detest her, and so does the Republican establishment, for her perceived lack of sophistication and polarising effect on the electorate. But neither will make the choice in the Iowa caucus. The party activists will, and they are shifting behind her. Long before the contest has formally begun, Palin is fast on the way to becoming unstoppable.

Marilea David, a lifelong Republican, is typical of the fan base, seeing in Palin an alternative to the old-boy network. "I think she is great. She is the only person I am excited about just now," David said over coffee in west Des Moines.

"She is fiscally conservative. She married her husband for love, not money. She does not have perfect kids, which is big for me. She has been totally vetted by the liberal media and they did not come up with anything other than she is a 'hick'."

David, 52, who runs her own home tutoring business, will not be attending Friday's dinner. "I am a broke Republican. But if she runs, I will give her my time. I would love to campaign for her."

We’ll see if the “Republican establishment” is the same after 2010. She’s knocked out a lot of RINOs already.

Over time, it went from Palin wouldn’t be running ‘cos she left her Governor’s job and therefore didn’t have political platform to engage in politics, to she isn’t running ‘cos she likes making money, to wouldn’t win the nomination ‘cos the republican establishment or Romney would stop her, and now finally that she won’t be president ‘cos she’ll be easily be beaten by Obama.

But Palin is already polling level with Obama even though she hasn’t yet started running a campaign, and has been running in essence a one-woman operation.

Still hanging on to their illusions.

I don’t think she’ll be running against Obama. I think she’ll be running against Hillary.

C-SPAN is covering her speech to the Iowa Republicans at their RWR dinner live, and I will post a LIVE thread on Friday for us.

We already have Gingritch, Pataki, Palenty, Barbour, and the Huckster beat.

They’ve already exposed themselves as unfit, and their baggage will be easy to throw at them.

DeMint is not going to run, and will likely be our Senate leader.

Romney will be a battle, but Palin is polling well ahead of him already.

I pray that she runs and wins in 2012. At this point she can probably beat anyone that the rats put up. It will be the death of the entrenched pols in the GOP if they pull the same crap they tried and are trying against Miller, O’Donnell, etc.

My post to the Guardian:

I’m a conservative American and I’d put a bet on Palin to win the Republican nomination. Romney is too liberal for Republicans (he created a very similar health care system in Massachusetts to what Obama implemented for the USA). Romneycare in Massachusetts has been a disaster with huge cost overruns and big problems for the state. That is why Scott Brown, a Republican, won the Senate seat that Ted Kennedy held.

I would also bet that Palin wins against Obama. There’s two years to go but Obama has been a dismal failure so far and is openly a joke now among a big majority of non-black Americans. He has lost the independent vote at this point. Hillary may run against Obama which will bleed cash from the Dems and divide the party. Blacks will sit on their hands and Dems will be in trouble with 10% of the country and 20% of their vote sitting out the election if Obama loses, because blacks will be incredibly dispirited and angry. If Hillary loses, her supporters will be dispirited and lacking in energy; most importantly among the independent voters.

Massive government spending failed under Franklin Roosevelt to get the USA out of depression. We were in depression for 10 years under Roosevelt. 10 years of misery. Now that the internet exists it’s not so easy to play the “rubes” and “common people” and pretend a plan that is a failure is a success. Obama is an anti-colonialist and a socialist at heart and by vocation. He has used every trick he knows and has failed to create jobs — and there isn’t time for him to impose a dictatorship before the elections — and if he tried Americans are armed to the teeth.

Good luck socialists, but your idealogy doesn’t work and there are still Americans that have kept the faith.

Ping to my post 18. Summary of the relevant part. If Hillary beats Obama many blacks will not be happy. Many that would ordinarily vote Dem will not vote at all, in my opinion. Plus they’ll be spending big dollars on their primary contest . . . : )

There were nasty intramural wars here during the 07/08 primaries, I expect the same or worse this time. Fortunately, and God Bless Fred Thompson, but it is going to be more fun supporter Palin. The really interesting thing is that it seems all the Thompson supporters like Palin, and the rest either hate her or are skeptical. Looks it will be the same players warring all over again.

LOL!
