Michelle Obama marks day of service

Mrs. Obama was joined by Marie Tillman, widow of former NFL star-turned soldier Pat Tillman, students from George Washington University, and senior volunteers to help paint Vinson Hall in McLean, Virginia.

The First Lady greeted volunteers and posed for photos but then got to work painting a loading dock along-side several students. She spent about 15 minutes putting a coat of white paint on a wall and then meticulously painting a pipe with bright orange paint. After the painting was finished, she sat with some of the seniors from the community and chatted about topics from painting to the weather and even issuing an invitation to come see the Rose Garden at the White House.

Earlier in the day, Mrs. Obama was joined by former First Lady Laura Bush as the keynote speakers at a ceremony in Shanksville, Pennsylvania where Flight 93 crashed nine years ago.

Doing her part to serve, Obama grabbed a paint roller and began coating a brick wall of the loading dock with broad strokes of white paint. She chatted with another volunteer, unconcerned with the paint splattering white flecks on her black slacks and purple sneakers. She then moved on to paint pipes bright orange to make them more visible.

The first lady reluctantly relinquished her paint brush after speaking with several volunteers. Before heading out, she moved to a shaded area under a pine tree to chat with some of the community’s residents, including Navy veterans of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway.

In a statement issued yesterday, the first lady said the spirit of selflessness and service in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy is what inspired the first National Day of Service and Remembrance last year.

“On this day all Americans can honor the brave men and women who lost and risked their lives by serving others in their community,” she wrote in the statement. “On the anniversary of this tragic day in our history, I hope you will join me in honoring all those who put the needs of others before their own by serving in your community.”

I don’t need fat ass, Moochelle to lecture me on volunteering. I have been doing it all my life without her imput. Besides, when I volunteer I’m not at a photo op and trying to get my husband’s polling numbers up.

Exactly!

I realize Michelle has only recently become proud of her country, but there have been thousands of days of selfless service by millions of Americans without any prodding from the Obamas. She just hasn't noticed.
