Under new changes to the ban on plastic bags in Brownsville, shoppers will be charged an extra dollar for every transaction in which they use plastic bags after the ban goes into effect.
Starting January 5, the use of plastic bags will be banned inside the Brownsville city limits in effort to go green.
"We want to have a beautiful city, Commissioner Edward Camarillo said. We want to make sure that we take care of the environment."
The surcharge would be handed out by the stores.
Austin, Texas is now considering a ban on plastic shopping bags, making it the latest city to debate paper vs. plastic.

So true.
I prefer brown paper (I line my veggie bins with those).
But with meats the clerks use plastic.
I pass them on to the Poop Thief.
The browns pile up I take them down to the lil Boat/RV food store and they use them use them for customers.
A gal we know just came back from a Cali trip and being home on the range folks here in the PNW were we can/hunt/steward our resources she was shocked at the “psuedeo greenies” down there.
She said they act like they are into good earth stewardship (but don’t have a clue).
It is the “hip” thing to do, so it’s like all for show. Posers.
Hey if they outlaw plastic grocery bags are they going to outlaw the sale of Glad (or any brand) trash can liners/sandwich bags ect..?
I smell Bull Guacomali.
Someone one just came up with another “tax” under the guise of being “green”.
Really? When did cash on the barrel STOP being a conservative value?
I had a Dexter Morgan moment after reading your post.
My God how did we ever live in a Free society before plastic bags. /smart alec
First it was, “Don’t use paper. Save the trees. Use plastic.” I remember the first time getting a plastic bag and hating it because it seemed so insubstantial. It took about a week to love them because I could carry in almost all my purchases at one time and the condensation from cold stuff didn’t make the bag rip apart. Screw paper bags.
What a great idea! Give them a bill for forcing you to have to take all that trash just to get what you came for. Maybe a class action suit?
What a great idea!
Yet everything was covered with graffiti...much worse than here. And to top it off, they built a monstrous and hideously ugly windmill atop beautiful Grouse Mountain just north of the city. I didn't see it turn once. But you can enjoy your "greenness" by by taking in the view from the visitor center on windmill tower...
Yep.
No doubt...
Same here.
Same here.
We use plastic bags in Southern California. This particular law was shot down.
I like the way they do it at Trader Joe’s here in Los Angeles:
If you don’t bring your own bags, they give you bags [paper or plastic] as usual.
If you DO bring your own bags you get a ticket. You drop the ticket in a bowl and one is drawn from it weekly. Winner gets $25 free food. This goes on every week and has gone on for years.
It’s better to offer a reward for good behavior instead of punishing for not bringing your own bags.
Get ready for a weather tax.
I understand, and live in NorCal. That was an effort by the State legislature to ban bags statewide, but individual cities are targeting the bags. Many cities will go the same way as Brownsville.
Well, the year round great weather is worth a small fortune to us...Ya get what ya pay for.
