Could Matt Doheny eclipse Doug Hoffman's shooting star in NY's 23rd district?
The Post-Standard ^ | September 12, 2010 | Mark Weiner

Washington -- A year ago, Doug Hoffman could do no wrong in the eyes of conservative Republicans, who viewed the political newcomer as a rising star, the darling of the tea party movement.

As a third-party candidate seeking an open seat in the 23rd Congressional District, his anti-Washington message resonated from Upstate New York across the nation. A conservative group honored him in Washington with its Charlton Heston “Courage Under Fire” award. He fell just 3,600 votes short of an upset win against both major political parties.

But as the millionaire accountant from Saranac Lake makes his second bid for Congress this year, he suddenly finds himself abandoned by many of his big-name supporters in the biggest fight of his brief political career.

Republican Matt Doheny, a 40-year-old Alexandria Bay native who made his own fortune on Wall Street, has seized the momentum in Tuesday’s Republican primary against Hoffman. Doheny has the endorsement of every GOP committee or party leader in each of the 11 counties in the district.

Meanwhile, national conservative Republican leaders such as Sarah Palin, Fred Thompson and former New York Gov. George Pataki — all of whom endorsed Hoffman last year — have stayed out of the primary battle.

Does anyone know how this race is shaping up for Tuesday's primary? Is it as close as this article seems to indicate?

The RNC is aligning with the big government democrats. They are just playing their normal good cop role. Unfortunately a lot of Dopes fall for it.

I’m not following this race this time. Is Doheny as liberal as Scozzafava?

I know nothing about the race this time. I’ve not even seen it metioned on FR where Hoffman was the talk of the moment last year.

My reading of the article indicates that Doheny is acceptable as a conservative. I don’t know that’s why I’d hope that some locals would chime in.

Good question. I think Hoffman was the conservative last year for sure but I know nothing of Doheny. The following statement in the article indicates that the local Tea Party would support Doheny should he win but they are behind Hoffman.

.....Even Hoffman’s own Upstate New York Tea Party (UNYTEA) supporters say there is no doubt Doheny is conservative.....

Yeah, that’s also my understanding from reading the article. IMO, last year most people were more about against Dede than for Hoffman. At least that’s how I felt. Now that there’s a choice, especially if Doheny is quite conservative, it’ll be interesting to see. This time it’s primary too, not selection by the elites. If Hoffman loses, will he run under third party’s banner again this time?

Would these be the same folks who backed Skifooza?

I don’t know but would guess the answer is yes.

The only ones who never figure this out are the Republican primary voters. They are Edith Bunker Republicans.

Vote for the most conservative in the primary.

Support the winner in November. It is too important to have hurt feelings.

Doheney was one of the two conservatives that they should have chosen last year instead of DeDe. He was one of the two last year who had 55% of the vote to DeDe's 45% on the 1st ballot; after that, DeDe's personal buddies went against their constituents and switched to Dede to give her the nomination.

Doheney was a good republican though, who kept his promise NOT to run in the general. Hoffman was the pick of nobody in the contest last year, so he felt it was OK to go to the conservative party and get their nomination.

Hoffman was a good guy, but was known not to be a good candidate. Doherty should be a good pickup for conservatives, so long as if Hoffman loses his primary, he doesn't go off the reservation.

Hoffman hurt himself by saying he wouldn’t promise to support the GOP nominee. He deserves a clear shot at the race IMO but you don’t get to be the nominee just because it’s your turn. You have to convince the voters to nominate you.

Doheny is generally conservative, but is pro-abortion. The conservative whom the county leaders would have chosen had a RINO not gone against the wishes of her county’s Republicans and voted for DIABLO Dede Scozzafava was Paul Marroun (sp?), who is no less conservative than Doheny across the board but is also pro-life.

The problem this time around is the Hoffman has the Conservative Party nomination and Doheny has the Independence Party nomination and it is likely that whomever loses the GOP primary will stay on the ballot and perhaps play spoiler.
