President Barack Obama has paid a visit to "hallowed ground" at the Pentagon to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

He says it might be natural to focus on the searing images from "that awful morning" in 2001 when al-Qaida struck the U.S. and so many lives "were taken so cruelly."

Actually, it’s a categorical you’re attempting to describe, not a concept. I understand the concept perfectly. I’m talking about the designation of places and things.

I guess we can be relieved that he didn’t call for a moment of silence to remember the 5 muzzies who
“so valiantly served their faith that they were willing to die for it in battle with the infidel” (aka hijacked the plane and crashed it into the Pentagon, killing 187 Americans.)

[...‘hallowed ground’ talk possibly a bit overdone...]

I agree, every time there is a solemn ceremony at Pearl Harbor , the Beaches of Normandy or Arlington cemetery I’m sure you’ll agree, it is overdone and misapplied. s/

Don’t you think it is ironic that he chose to commerate at the Pentagon, the very place that his buddy Bill Ayers once bombed?? I think this man is sending subliminal messages to someone.

Hollowed ground pronunciation gave Gates a wince.

The end of his speech he said, “ And GOG bless America.” Another wince by Gates.

Who is GOG?

The speech was probably written by his new speechwriter but the pronounciator-in-chief is responsible for it’s delivery.

He complimented President Bush for defining those responsible for 9-11 but thanks GOG for blessing America, he is coming apart at the seams.

“”may get flamed severely for this especially today but is all the ‘hallowed ground’ talk possibly a bit overdone and/or misapplied?

By this I mean that, in the words of WGN radio’s Mike McConnell, there probably isn’t a piece of dry land that didn’t see some form of savage fighting for ownership if you look at the length and breadth of time man has been on earth.

Small European countries could conceivably declare 90% or more of their land, cities, or battlefields ‘hallowed ground’ but that would leave them with precious little land left for practical uses.

The word ‘hallowed’ is synonymous with ‘sacred’ is it not? I think of sacred ground as any location that was visited by Christ or where acts of God are/were witnessed and I must say that I don’t regard a spot where vile subhuman dogs committed atrocities to be especially sacred. Granted, the term ‘hallowed ground’ has been cheapened over the years - even baseball and football stadiums are referred to in this manner.

None of this, of course, dismisses or discounts the loss and sacrifice of the 9/11 victims and families but I think that all the talk of ‘hallowed ground’ only serves the aim of the terrorists who want us to hold them in awe.””

Here in the United States, we are not Europe, we have relatively few battle grounds, most from the Revolution and Civil War, Mex-American War, some Indian-American battles etc. Each and every one of those is considered Hollowed Ground and attempts are made to protect them no matter what.

That’s a fair enough response. As I said (or thought I said) I’m not opposed to the idea just wondering about people’s perception of or willingness to designate places as such.

I would suggest that your reply confirms my statement, but I will try.

Hallowed Ground are places of such importance that well Abraham Lincoln put it much better that anyone I know: "But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate; we can not consecrate; we can not hallow; this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract."

Hallowed Ground are beacons of man's history, beacons who's brightness is such that not the passing of time nor even the greatest of social or political upheavals can dim their importance.

Hallowed Ground are places which need to be preserved as they are the landmarks on the map of Humanity's travels. Places of such importance that without them we can not see where we have been or where we need to go.

That's the best I can do in a way of explanation and undoubtedly I did a poor job and you still do not understand, but I believe that there are many many FRiends here that will and do, which only brings us back to my first answer: That Hallowed Ground is a concept that if you don't understand it no amount of explanation will.
