Apres le deluge’ — a liberated Obama? (Lanny Davis - Obama wins if dems lose)
The Hill ^ | Lanny Davis - 09/08/10 | Lanny Davis

If the Democrats lose ... there may be a ray of sunshine for President Obama.

A president forced to deal with the opposition party in Congress can actually end up more successful and more popular.

Remember President Clinton's experience post-1994 deluge. He was disappointed for a while, but then he found he was, in many ways, liberated from following the agenda of the most liberal base of his party.

President Clinton was forced to work with, and at times painfully forced to compromise with the Republicans.

The result of Bill Clinton being forced to sit down with Republicans and work out compromises was a balanced budget and $1 trillion surplus and a 65 percent job approval rating on Jan. 20, 2001 — his last day in office.

So don't be surprised that, if the Democrats lose the House or — God forbid — the Senate too this November 2010, the end result could be a boon and gift of independence for President Barack Obama from following, or at least being heavily influenced by, Democratic congressional majorities — and the liberal blogosphere and organizations such as MoveOn, which hammered him over the last two years for not being liberal enough.

Obama can return to and actually practice the approach to governance that was the core message of his campaign and contributed mightily to his victory in 2008.

There is not a red America or a blue America, but rather, a United States of America.

So out of the deluge, if there is one, President Obama may be able to convince the Republicans, who are no longer the opposition party and now might be blamed for the country's unsolved economic and social problems and the budget deficits: It's time to put aside hyper-partisan politics and get back into the solutions business.

Extrapolating from one data point is risky.

Just because it worked in the Clinton Administration, it doesn’t mean that it will work with Obama.

Clinton, after all was a lot more pragmatic and less ideological than the current nutjob in the White House.

When the Republicans take charge in 2011, I expect Obama to fight them all the way - he just doesn’t have the mindset for Capitalism.

Once the elections are over and Obama is out of the campaign mode where he has been getting yet another chance to face adoring crowds (albeit smaller ones)...and once he does not have Pelosi, Reid and others to pump him up every day...I doubt he will be able to do much of anything. He will have lost his much needed narcissistic supply. There won't be many around to give him his daily “fix,” and lie to him or fall under his spell.

The emotional melt down is coming. I will be really, really surprised if he makes it through his term without his "neediness" becoming a very apparent problem. But, if he does it will be with the help of professionals secretly summoned to the WH to tend to his emotional needs.

"A president forced to deal with the opposition party in Congress can actually end up more successful and more popular."

And pigs can fly.

How did that "working with Congress" thing work out for Herbert Hoover in 1930-1932? What happened in 1932?

Obama ain’t Clinton. Obama makes Clinton look like the poster boy for self respect and good mental health. Obozo thinks that since he won he gets to be the big boss of everybody. “Forced to deal”? Let’s just see how THAT works out...

All Obama knows how to do is blame others. The past couple years, where he could not logically blame the powerless Republicans, yet continued to do so, prove it. He will be relieved to have his hands tied by the Republicans, as he can return to endlessly whining and pointing fingers without all the “why isn’t he governing?” talk that has been exhausting for him to dodge. In his mind, he’ll be doing a great job, and will never understand why the public sees him as weak and ineffective. His conclusion will be that the public is too stupid to appreciate his genius and too rascist to accept him. How could such a useless clown become POTUS?

Nothing is entertaining about Obama!

Clinton got his second term due to open primaries when the Democrats, in the early primaries, crossed over and elected un-winnable Bob Dole as the Republican nominee.

The Dems also gave us McCain through the same process and there’s no telling what they give us for 2012 if the process ain’t fixed.

If the Republicans take control of the House and Senate, they should not compromise. They should block everything that Obama does - shut him down to make his as weak and powerless as possible.

Leave it to Lanny Davis to spin like a ceiling fan. I believe it will be the electorate, not Obama, that will do the convincing. Yes, the republicans set the agenda for Clinton’s second term, and spinners like Lanny easily co-opted the Media into giving the credit to Clinton.

Fool me once!

If this is true, then why didn't Clinton pay down the national debt?

I keep thinking of this idiot in a meeting to discuss the take over of the auto industry, and he says, Why can’t Chrysler make a corrola....

I think much is going to come out about him and the first family. It will make for some great tabloid reading. I am sure Michelle treats the staff like dogs.....and Obama in meetings is nothing more than a puppet. I don’t think he has the capacity to come up with anything creative to get our country back on track. Like the arabs...he knows how to tear something down, not build it back up... I look for him to veto....anything the republicans hand him.

I’m praying that this time, the republicans don’t back down...

Clinton was capable of understanding political reality and turning a situation to his advantage.

Obama is an Alinskyite and has a strict agenda from which he will not deviate.

Clinton desperately wanted approval and love, and used politics as a way to get those. I've said before he would have been a Republican if young Nixon supporters put out more than leftist hippie chicks.

Obama is a leftist ideologue. He's not going to change his plans just because of a little disapproval (or even being burned in effigy by millions of protestors).

Obama will be a prisoner in the White House, helpless, powerless & gelded, like Jimmah Cahtah was in his last two years.

The MSM is peddling this new line repeatedly. If the Republicans win it will be a good thing for Zero because they will provide him with a foil. The MSM is gearing up to dump on the new Republican members after November, but it ain’t gonna work.

It’d only work if Obama can move to the center.

Which is something I *HIGHLY* doubt.

Interesting observation.

The Dear Leader appears to have many coat holders and lackeys and very few old friends.

Are there any other politicians this shallow who went this far?

Well... that’s because Clinton was getting all the tail he wanted from his interns.

And we all know that getting your rocks off on a regular basis tends to alleviate one’s frustrations.

I don’t really see that happening for the Obamanation.

:-P
