Apres le deluge’ — a liberated Obama? (Lanny Davis - Obama wins if dems lose)
The Hill ^ | Lanny Davis - 09/08/10 | Lanny Davis

If the Democrats lose ... there may be a ray of sunshine for President Obama.

A president forced to deal with the opposition party in Congress can actually end up more successful and more popular.

Remember President Clinton's experience post-1994 deluge. He was disappointed for a while, but then he found he was, in many ways, liberated from following the agenda of the most liberal base of his party.

President Clinton was forced to work with, and at times painfully forced to compromise with the Republicans.

The result of Bill Clinton being forced to sit down with Republicans and work out compromises was a balanced budget and $1 trillion surplus and a 65 percent job approval rating on Jan. 20, 2001 — his last day in office.

So don't be surprised that, if the Democrats lose the House or — God forbid — the Senate too this November 2010, the end result could be a boon and gift of independence for President Barack Obama from following, or at least being heavily influenced by, Democratic congressional majorities — and the liberal blogosphere and organizations such as MoveOn, which hammered him over the last two years for not being liberal enough.

Obama can return to and actually practice the approach to governance that was the core message of his campaign and contributed mightily to his victory in 2008.

There is not a red America or a blue America, but rather, a United States of America.

So out of the deluge, if there is one, President Obama may be able to convince the Republicans, who are no longer the opposition party and now might be blamed for the country's unsolved economic and social problems and the budget deficits: It's time to put aside hyper-partisan politics and get back into the solutions business.

The Clinton example is legitimate. This could get entertaining.

Obama is too pleased playing the victim, to ready to bash the Republicans in public. Clinton thought himself smarter than and more attractive to the public than the Republicans, and he was right; Obama thinks both of these things, too, and he’s wrong.

So Lanny just stated that Clinton usurped the Republicans’ ideas and took the credit!!!!!!

Who knew???

Spot On! The ever delusional Davis is just bucking for a new government job when most of the other rats go for a prolonged swim.

I don’t think so. Obama is a true idealogue. He will try to work around Congress and rule through his czars and with moneys from non appropriated or replenished funds such as TARP replacement.

Another in a long dreary succession of “thoughtful” pieces on how a Republican victory won’t really be a victory at all.

Don’t listen to this or any version of this.

We’re coming to take back the government, or as much of it as we can in the midterms, no matter what the “thoughtful pundits” think.

Well, mostly. I’m trying to recall a $1 trillion surplus. For the life of me I dont’ recall much of a surplus at all, just a temporary slowdown in the growth of the annual deficit.

Obama isn’t Billy Jeff.

Clinton was capable of understanding political reality and turning a situation to his advantage.

Obama is an Alinskyite and has a strict agenda from which he will not deviate.

I predict that Obama will resign before the end of his first term — sometime in the next 26 months.

I think you’re right. Lanny Davis is the living embodiment of the word “obsequious.”

I don’t think Obama will be doing any compromising, he’s the ultimate authority on everything. At least Clinton could be personally likable whereas Obama just isn’t.

Wishful thinking Lanny, but no comparison.

Obama is a revolutionary, and he will not stop until he is out of office.

Having the class enemy in a position of actual power, albeit power without control of the military and the executive branch, could actually work to his advantage.

I hope so. There are too many RINOs in congress who want to play go along to get along.

Not all together so... This last congress has innumerable legal problems. Democrats and Obama must be exposed and held accountable. Investigate and prosecute.

My initial fear was our Dear Leader would successfully triangulate himself, like the Slickster. But I think you're right, Obummer is a true idealogue (and a narcissist, to boot) and he's not going to budge. So much the better for conservatives!

You’ve got that right. Obama will get his agenda through other means. He didn’t spend his time placing commie czars in key positions for nothing. I think this was all part of his plan. I suspect he knew that the people would turn against him and the only way to continue his agenda was via czar regulators. It’s not easy turning the US into a socialist country once the veil has been lifted.

Have you read Dinesh D’asouza’s article about Obama being all about neo-colonialism?

It’s a very good article and describes why he is trying to destroy the U.S.A.

Sure worked out well for Bush when he had to deal with the Democrat Majority didn’t it?

Its a new day Lanny, this isn’t the 1990s anymore, people will see right through Obama.

The other thing about Obama is that he is stark raving mad. Clinton wasn’t nuts; he may have been one of the world’s biggest egoists, but he wasn’t a sociopath.

If the GOP wins big, I don’t think Bambi’s going to take kindly to not being able to do whatever he wants. At best, things will just be gridlocked for 2 years (until he can be taken out of the WH in a straight jacket).
