NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The nation's top automakers reported disappointing sales Wednesday, resulting in the worst August for industrywide auto sales in 27 years.
According to sales tracker Autodata, U.S. new vehicle sales fell just short of 1 million vehicles, a drop of 21% from a year ago, which included Cash for Clunkers. That federal program created a sugar rush of sales by dangling an incentive of up to $4,500 in cash for buyers who traded in older gas guzzlers for more efficient models.

I need a car but I will get a car which I can afford with cash.
We have been looking for some time now as our other car is about to die and yet the price of cars is outrageous.
10 grand I have and I can’t even get a decent car today
hahaha
C4C was nothing but a waste of tax dollars
Imagine how bad it would have been if this wasn’t the summer of recovery. The auto industry can thank Obama for mitigating their losses!
1983? Let's build the K-Car again!
I did my part; I bought my new Audi A5 in August.
Geez that thing still looks like a sardine can that went through a H.S. wood shop class!
Sales might have been better if the Union/Govt. run car companies hadn’t closed some of their best performing dealerships for political reasons.
You get plenty for your money.
The most overcomplicated and inefficient pollution control known to man.
An underpowered CAFE engine.
A host of safety features that won't help you inside your overly light tin foil passenger compartment.
Proprietary secrecy in parts specifications to prevent competition for OEM scalping.
An on board computer to rat you out to the cops.
Full pay and benefits for labor banked UAW slackers.
Free lifetime full medical for UAW retirees.
So see, you get a lot, but you may not get it started.
Bought the wifey a Mercedes E350 in August as well. Looks like the Germans are selling.
We just need to raise taxes to make up the losses. :)
Sure, they sell a decent product. Far more so than the garbage produced by the overpaid union drones working out of Detroit.
I won’t buy another American made car while Obama and the dems are in power, period.
Now, is there anyone out there that can tell me about the Mini Cooper?
Of course.
For the first time in a long time, people are buying at replacement levels only. Many have severely adjusted their standard of when they “need” a new, or a different vehicle.
Same with houses, only even more so. There is NO intrinsic demand to BUY houses. There are almost no cases in which a person/family could not rent, rather than buy, if they “had” to for some reason. So people are also buying homes mostly at replacement value — which means largely a return to the days when a family bought one or maybe two homes in a lifetime. They did not sell their old home and buy a new one to move across town or to get a mud room, a larger yard or whatever.
Probably the government...fleet cars, etc. Or, maybe oprah bought cars for her audience again...who knows.
Well with 10 grand you've got the down payment.......
On a more serious note, I've had good luck buying older very low mileage estate cars. Now you won't find many Corvettes or mini vans, but a lot of Buicks, Caddys, and Lincolns.
Last year I got a 6 yr old Caddy with 16k miles for 15 grand that was in essentially new condition and I love it. It's a double bonus in my state (Indiana) because the yearly registration fees are reduced as the vehicle ages and are trivial when you hit 9 years old.
LOL
yea those nav systems I thought were great until I noticed how the Govt can track you, so a NAV system is out.
No GM car for me based on principle.
Looking for a car big enough to get the family in(no they’re not fat LOL)
Need low mileage , decent fuel economy and less than 10 grand.
I’m screwed and I will not go into debt for it just to say what a fancy car I have either.
talked to a friend the other day and he told me he got a camry , which he traded his Toyota tundra(nice one too)
He said he would never buy a GM now it is obama’s baby so whose buying GM, ?
idiots I’;d say
