Murkowski Likely to Lose Leadership Spot if Campaign Continues
Roll Call ^ | 09/08/10 | John Stanton

Posted on 09/08/2010 8:04:08 PM PDT by freespirited

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) will likely be forced out of her party leadership position should she decide to launch a write-in or third-party candidacy, a Senate Republican said Wednesday.

Murkowski, who conceded the GOP primary last month to Fairbanks lawyer Joe Miller, could announce as soon as Thursday whether she will continue her campaign for re-election as a write-in candidate. She has also held talks with the state’s Libertarian Party leaders about running under their flag.

Although Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and other GOP leaders have not yet formally discussed what to do if Murkowski does run, the Senate Republican said there is likely no scenario in which she would be allowed to remain Republican Conference vice chairwoman.

According to this source, Murkowski could simply resign her position, or McConnell and other leaders could press her to resign. The conference could also formally vote to strip Murkowski of her leadership mantle.

Assuming she does stay in the race and is stripped of her title, Republicans would be forced to wait until after the November elections to vote to install a new member in her position.

Republicans, however, said they hope Murkowski drops the idea of continuing her re-election efforts. “She’s an adult. She lost the race,” one senior GOP Senate aide said.

Even as Murkowski has flirted with the possibility of continuing to campaign, Republicans have quickly fallen behind Miller, who upset Murkowski thanks to the support of members of the tea party movement.

For instance, McConnell has contributed $5,000 to Miller’s campaign through his Bluegrass political action committee, while the National Republican Senatorial Committee has donated $42,600.

Murkowski was traveling in rural Alaska and could not immediately be reached for comment.

“She’s an adult. She lost the race,” one senior GOP Senate aide said.

These people are so DUMB. Maybe it would give her some sort of emotional satisfaction to get revenge by acting as a spoiler, but it would destroy any chances of a future career in politics. And it would lose her a lot of useful friends and connections if she decides to leave politics.

So, what is the point? These people are just plain sick.

Nice to see the party hacks at least telling her they will have to start the bus...

I wish they’d TOSS her under and roll over her a few times just to be sure...

But, this sign is at least promising.

Maybe they aren’t ALL dumb after all...

It's all about power for the RINOs and they will fight to the bitter end to keep it.

whether she will continue her campaign for re-election as a write-in candidate

If you were named "Murkowski" would you really want a write in campaign? John Smith, I could understand. But Murkowski will have to spend half of her stump speech teaching the audience how to spell her name.

Sore loser doesn’t begin to define Lisa’s fury.

Now she’s lost the Senate’s support.

They’re backing Joe Miller, and rightly so.

I am always reminded of that scene at the end of the movie Trading Places where Don Ameche screams, "Turn those machines back on! Turn those machines back on!" These people are so accustomed to their pompous Senate Club memberships that they cannot fathom living outside high society.

Well, the senior GOP Senate aide was right on the second part but if Lisa doesn't accept the fact that Miller beat her and endorse him the first part is up for debate.

Like you I suspect some of these people are just plain sick.

Wow, Jeffords in Vermont, Crist in Florida, Murkowski in Alaska? Is this a trend?

She seems drunk with power that she will try and hold onto at any cost.

I was waiting for this one. The leadership in the Senate are putting the screws to Murk. She has put them in a very uncomfortable postion as the article relates.

Good they deserve it. :)

Yes, and the ‘good senators’ would be best advised to act sooner rather than later. Murkowski either endorses Miller or she is stripped of everything. I am thinking they’re worried that she will vote with ‘democrats’ in the lame duck session.

Tick Tock.

It one this too lose an election in a whole different thing to go down in flames.

Murk is on the verge of the latter.

She’s far from Libertarian or Constitutional Conservative whichever term is preferred. If anything she’s a not quite as bad Spector and should try to get the Democrat candidate to bow out.

As I understand it, Alaska has a sore-loser law that will prevent her from running as a write-in candidate. In order to do that she had to be registered as an independent “before” the primary.

She can only run as a candidate for a 3rd party.

She is through.

Classy thing would be to step aside. If she *really* can’t give it up, try again in 4 years to try to take back the other Alaska seat from the Dem who stole it from Stevens...
