Get an Injunction (New Republic Calls on Obama to Stop Koran Burning Protest)
The New Republic ^ | Wednesday, September 8, 2010 | Martin Peretz

Posted on 09/08/2010 6:17:35 PM PDT by kristinn

The Dove World Training Center in Gainesville, Florida and its pastor Perry (sic) Jones plan a Koran bonfire on the ninth anniversary of the World Trade Center-Pentagon enormity.

But it is disgusting. And it is disgusting no matter how many people believe the act would be and should be protected by the First Amendment.

In fact, it is uncivilized. I believe that the Obama administration should go to the Supreme Court or maybe tactically to the most sensible and civilized appellate court and seek an injunction against this atrocity that 1. will encourage Muslim madmen to respond in kind and 2. will also encourage primitive Christians to extend and expand the auto da fé.

Jones is certifiable. He is 100% behind the nutty church protesting at soldiers funerals. If some clown kills him he should get at least life in a Florida prison. Where is the loss?

On September 4, 2010, Peretz posted an editorial which concluded:

“But, frankly, Muslim life is cheap, most notably to Muslims. And among those Muslims led by the Imam Rauf there is hardly one who has raised a fuss about the routine and random bloodshed that defines their brotherhood. So, yes, I wonder whether I need honor these people and pretend that they are worthy of the privileges of the First Amendment which I have in my gut the sense that they will abuse.”

So, it seems like Peretz is an equal opportunist in denying people their First Amendment rights.

And for the record, you had quite a few days where you posted more Palin articles than the Palin ping list did.

Well, if the writer hasn't established anything else, he has certainly established that he doesn't have the first clue how the federal judiciary works.

Correct. There is no legal basis for any court to enter the fray. Obama would have to declare martial law in that county to stop it, and that would mean sending in the military.

Won't happen.

Although I find burning the Koran disguting behavior, especially by a man who professes to be a man of god....

I would like to point out that if a church/synagogue/mosque burnt a stack of bibles, the worst thing that would happen is firery rhetoric, scathing editorials and a buzz on the internet.

Burn a stack of Korans, cities burn and many people die......

It was embarassing to watch administration officials and some of the military infrastructure condemn this preacher as though they were afraid of Muslims.....

Why didn’t they just stand up and defend the preachers right and freedom to do this?

Wasn’t this a teachable moment???

actually it’s you liberals who have no problem trashing Christianity...why don’t you be a real hero and do the same publically to Islam?!...oh that’s right you won’t because you know that Muslims may kill/or threaten to kill you, but Christians won’t

...think Salman Rushdie, Geert Wilders, Danish Cartoon, etc

Your finger pointing is weak - you are known for your obsession of SARAH. Your obsession should be reported to the authorities, IMO.

We should have a burn the koran day, 9/11 is good, with celebrations all over - sort of poetic justice to counter the ground zero mosque act. I’m going out to find one now!

If they respond in kind, it too would be disgusting but that is not the issue. Responding in kind would be burning Bibles but that is not how the ROP will respond. Terrorism and murder is not responding in kind.

Although I disagree with his methods, that is the exact point that the Pastor is trying to make. Islam is being hijacked by a radical element and their over the top response will prove his point. If a picture of The Prophet in a newspaper incites someone to murder the publisher, imagine the mayhem this will create.

We as a society can prevent him from acting and sweep the truth about Islam under the rug or we can man up and face the reality of what we are dealing with...it's our choice.

Concern over a backlash proves that Ron Paul and his fellow travelers believe Islam is a violent organization.

9/11 is perfect for burning that convoluted hate filled piece of murderous garbage as it is solely responsible for that horrible event. and Please let the Animals riot, they will see something about anger they never knew existed!

Hmmmm ... no mention of the government being called to get involved there. She disagrees with Koran burning and finds it counter-productive. That's her right and I am still a big fan of hers. But ... I don't view Islam as strictly a religion. It may be a theology, but it is also an ideology and a sociology bound together in a system more dangerous than Hitler's quest for a Perfect Society ever was. I've no problem burning a swastika ... why not a Koran?
